Leibniz, G W: Theodicy, v.1, 20 November 2008.
G.W. Leibniz (1646–1716)
Theodicy Essays on the Goodness of God the Freedom of Man and the Origin of Evil Edited with an Introduction by Austin Farrer, Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford Translated by E.M. Huggard. Published 1985 by Open Court Publishing Company, Peru, Illinois 61354. This edition first published 1951 by Routledge & Kegan Paul Limited, London. The source was Project Gutenberg. Theodicy is an attempt to explain and justify God’s behaviour. How can a benevolent, all-powerful and all-knowing God allow so much evil in the world? Leibniz suggests that this is the best of all the possible worlds that God might have created. I have stripped out the page numbers (which are unnecessary, because the paragraphs are numbered); transliterated Greek quotations and reformatted. I did not include the index. |
