Leroux, Gaston: The Perfume of the Lady in Black (illus). v1. 01 Nov 2021

Joseph Rouletabille, the young journalist turned detective, is once more pitted against his arch-enemy, Frederic Larsan. The mysterious crime committed in the Square Tower tests even Rouletabille’s powers of logic and deduction.

The Perfume of the Lady in Black (Le Parfum de la Dame en Noir), first published in 1908, is the second in the series of books featuring the fictional detective Joseph Rouletabille. It has been adapted for film several times over the decades.

Because this book reunites several of its characters from its predecessor, The Mystery of the Yellow Room, and references much of the material from that book, it is recommended to read the “Yellow Room” first.

==========
Gaston Louis Alfred Leroux (6 May 1868 – 15 April 1927) was a French journalist and author of detective fiction. In the English-speaking world, he is best known for writing the novel The Phantom of the Opera (Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, 1910), which has been made into several film and stage productions of the same name, notably the 1925 film starring Lon Chaney, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical, and Joel Schumacher’s 2004 film based on the musical.

Leroux’s 1907 novel The Mystery of the Yellow Room is one of the most celebrated locked room mysteries; and his contribution to French detective fiction is considered a parallel to those of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the United Kingdom and Edgar Allan Poe in the United States.
