RTF to EPUB Questions

Hi,

I have a lot of text files in RTF that I would like to convert to EPUBs for my Sony T1.

I have a question:

How do I have to format the files using MS Word and what options do I have to set in Calibre so that headings and subheadings are used to form a toc that has clickable links on the reader. Same with footnotes. Calibre just flattens them and they can't be navigated, which is annoying if u have a lot of them. If I use an online service like 2epub.com the footnotes work how they should.

Any help appreciated!

If you're using MSWord then you should style your headings with one (or more) of the built-in heading styles ('Heading 1', 'Heading 2', ... etc).

For example if you styled your chapter headings with Word style 'Heading 2' then this is the equivalent of using <h2> HTML tags and you should set Convert - StructureDetection - Detect chapters at to //h:h2

Thanks, but that didn't work for me. Any help on the footnote thing?

It's hard to say what your problem is without seeing your RTF. All I can say is it works for me, perhaps your conversion settings need changing.

The attached zip contains 4 files:
  • a sample RTF containing chapters (styled with 'Heading 2') and footnotes
  • an epub created by a RTF-to-EPUB conversion
  • an HTML file created from the RTF by doing an MSWord File - SaveAs - webpage-filtered
  • an epub created by a ZIP-to-EPUB conversion, after importing the HTML file into Calibre (which changes the .htm file to a .zip file)
Both conversions used the same conversion settings.

Both epubs contain a working TOC when viewed in the Calibre Viewer.

Only the ZIP-to-EPUB conversion retains the footnotes hyperlinks. As a general rule saving your RTFs as HTML (webpage-filtered) before importing to Calibre will give a 'better' epub conversion.
Attached Files
File Type: zip Chapters.zip (11.5 KB, 131 views)

Wow! Thanks for your effort! I'll try it out! What settings are you using in Calibre? (Oh and which Word Version? Mine is 2007)

My Word version is ancient -- Office XP -- which was version 10.
This was the complete Calibre job details log from the last conversion (zip-to-epub, I think). It details all the settings.
