Frozen sleeping screen - factory reset didn't work

My Kobo Aura HD is stuck on the sleeping screen. I charged it all night before attempting to fix it. I've done NOTHING that could damage the screen. The screen has no lines on it. It looks totally normal. I did a manual factory reset and the power light blinked very quickly for about 45 seconds. It's still stuck. Currently, I have the light on in order to drain the battery, in the hope that a dead battery might somehow help.

Any suggestions? Maybe there's a way to re-flash it from my computer? (I haven't figured out how to connect it since the screen won't change when I plug it in.)

Thanks!

What do you mean by a manual factory reset?

Try this: press and hold the power button for at least 30 seconds.

Also quit trying to run the battery down.

How did you charge it all night?

Did you use a wall charger?

1. Google knows. Hold the light button and power button until the light flashes rapidly.

2. I tried holding the power button for over 60 seconds several times.

3. Why should I quit running the battery down?

4. I charged it all night with a wall charger.

Thank you.
I did not need a Google link. I needed to know exactly what you did.
That is a reboot not a factory reset.
Turn off the light. Do not run the battery down.
I have never heard of a dead battery helping anything.
On most if not all Kobos there is a small pinhole. You need to stick a paperclip in to completely reset the device.

Oh and if you used a pull apart wall adapter, make sure the usb end is all the way in the adapter.
I have that problem with my charger every once in a while.
That will hold the battery where it is but not charge it.

Try pressing power butten for 20 sec until it power off, then turn it on.
Or us the paperclip botten, and see if it have any effect on the screen.

If you can control the light button and the led flash and sreen stuck in sleep mode, it might be a broken screen, can you post a photo of the screen.

1. Weird. Why does Kobo disagree with you in my link? If you click on it, you'll see that Kobo says that's how to do a factory reset, not a reboot.

2. I turned off the light.

3. I tried the pinhole method as well. It didn't seem to do anything.

4. The battery charged correctly.

The screen looks very, very normal. I promise nothing about its appearance has changed. I can post if you still want me to.

What was the last thing exactly that you did to your device.?
Do not link me to anything.
Tell me exactly what you did and where you put it.
Also have you ever dropped it or sat something on it?
How long did you leave the paperclip in the hole?

My apologies, they have changed the wording since I bought my kobo.

And thanks for that link, it explains why many people that have kindles (coming from kobo) get the wording wrong since pushing the power button on a kindle does not set it back to factory.

The first step that Kobo list is the problem. The device MUST be off for the factory reset to work. The steps I give are:
  1. Charge the device for at least an hour
  2. Hold the power switch in the off position for about 20 seconds. This forces the device to turn off
  3. Press and hold the light button.
  4. While holding the light button, turn it on.
  5. Release the light button when the LED flashing changes or the screen changes.
That usually works, but sometime it takes a few times if you don't get the timing right. And don't skip any steps. Because of how the device works, all steps are needed.

The pinhole only does something if the device is running. It does a warm-reboot of the device. Whether it does anything useful, depends on the state.

4. The battery charged correctly.
You can't be sure of that. Until you get the device running and can see the charge meter, you cannot be sure that it is actually charging properly.

As to connecting to a PC, in the state it is in, all that will do is charge the battery. The device has to be running and you have to tap the connect button on the screen to get it to connect. You can write an image to the internal SD card, but you have to take the card out and mount it in a PC.

Aha! I'll try following those steps in order when I get home tonight.

I thought my battery had charged well simply because I could keep the light on for so long. You're right, there's a chance that the battery was getting low. However, last night, before I charged it, it was at about 70%, so it should be okay, I would think.

The problem is we don't know what the device is doing. If what has happened is something has gotten into an infinite loop, it might be using a lot of CPU or doing a lot of disc access. That will run the battery down quickly. That's why I always say to charge the battery for a while.

The power off after charging is because when you connect the device to power, it will start after a few seconds if it is off. You need to force it off before the next step.

I followed your steps very carefully many times. The light flashes the way the reset should make it flash. I think I'm going to attempt to get a refund. Any other suggestions before I do?

The last thing I can think of, and has worked for others in the past, is to simply plug it into a charger and leave it for a day.

Other than that, it is faulty. If you can still exchange it, you should.

I tried that too. Thanks. I'm trying to return it now.
