I'd like to see the glyph outline rendering and the justification fix. Thank you. Oh and one more thing, do you have hyphenation turned on? If not, please turn it on. Thanks. |

Also: can't you try the mod yourself? That's going to be easier than me taking a bunch of screenshots ![]() I should note: the whole reason the baseline issue is fixed is because the mod treats each font as unhinted, which avoids the buggy grid-fitting path that causes the actual rendering bug. (Not using hinting info what KOReader does by default, too, so it's not like it looks bad. If anything, it's more accurate to the design of the actual typeface.) |

Here are my screenshots of before and after. The ones with a after the number in the name is the after. The image on the left is the before and the image on the right is the after.

@JSWolf: The main body text looks identical between the before and after.
You can see the hinting fix is working if you look at how the header and footer are being rendered; it's subtly different. (In the word "Chapter" in the header, the "e" is stretched in the before picture, and it's not stretched in the after, and the lowercase "a" also reads more correct to me as well?) A slight correction about how the mod works: the hinting path is the one that is taken when it's present in the font. The mod forces all fonts onto the "hinting" path, which retains the original outlines + applies hinting. Since your font likely has good hinting, it skips the grid-fitting problem altogether. But fonts without hinting (of which there are many, especially if you sideload!) tend to be broken, which is fixed by the mod. |

I did notice the header/footer change between the two screens. I didn't notice the stretched letters in the header. I notice them now after you pointed them out. NickelTypeFix works pretty well. When I read the book I posted screens from, I'll read it in KePub. |

Definitely neatened up the text in justified. In particular em-dashes used to cause the line it's in to end slightly to the left of the rest of the lines sometimes.
Love that people are working on this kind of stuff, cheers Last edited by hengyu; 08-09-2026 at 06:08 AM. |

Thank you for this! This is really nice, even if you use the fonts that come with your eReader by default. I could see the text wobbling effect with Amasis back when I was using it (fourth screen shot, showing Amasis with geometricPrecision in Kobo eReader.conf with no NickelTypeFix). Compare it with the first screenshot showing Amasis with NickelTypeFix + optimizeLegibility.
Literata also looks much better, too, IMO (third screenshot). I even see some improvements using Jon's ChareInk7SP that I prefer using in Nickel these days (second screenshot). |
