Thorne, Guy: The City in the Clouds (1922), v1
Guy Thorne (Cyril Arthur Edward Ranger Gull, 1875–1923)
British author of over 100 works, fiction and non-fiction, mostly as by "Guy Thorne", a few as by "Ranger Gull" and "Cyril Cresswell Inglesby". This is a typical Guy Thorne novel, but published under the name C Ranger Gull. I have elected to upload his books under the one name, the best-known one. An vastly wealthy man builds a city on an enormously tall structure above London, as accessible to outsiders as Tibet's Lhasa-- ie, not at all. Newspaper proprietor Sir Thomas Kirby sets out to penetrate the impenetrable city in the clouds, partly because he is in love with the wealthy millionaire's daughter, who is now in the city, high above London. Unusually un-Blimpy for the era: the love interest is the beautiful Juanita, a Brazilian girl, and the hero's best friend is the capable young man from China, Pu-Yi. I hope it's not a completely typical Guy Thorne novel, as his all-time best-seller, "When it was Dark", was deeply antisemitic, as well as unbelievable, from beginning to end. Mind you, it's a book that is worth reading just the same (available at Gutenberg), if only to show how much attitudes have changed in the last 110 years.
[edit] I should also have said thanks for bringing this book to Mobileread: I appreciate the work involved. Last edited by Araucaria; 11-20-2018 at 02:25 PM. Reason: thanks |
