problem with calibre

complete newbie has somehow managed to download a .torrent file, and convert to .pdf - but calibre (which seems to have installed OK) won't convert it - error message comes up every time. I'm still reeaaly excited about what it can do - thanks to all the developers!!!!

Can anyone advise please?

What error message are you getting?

Did you download the torrent with a bittorent client (like uTorrent) or just rename the .torrent file to .pdf? I ask because a .torrent file is the instructions that tell the bittorent software how to download the actual PDF you are after.

Can you open the PDF with Adobe Acrobat? If so, can you select the text or is it just scanned images? I don't think Calibre is able to convert PDFs if the file hasn't been converted to text via optical character recognition. If this is the case then try something like pdflrf (download from the PirateBay) or soPdf.

A .torrent file is not a .pdf file. So what you have is not something that will convert. And since you are trying to get a .pdf from a .torrent file, chances are this is most likely an illegal .pdf you are trying to get. So, help is not on the way unless you can prove the .pdf is 100% legal.

Thanks and hi - yes, I can view the file with adobe 7.0 - it looks like it has been scanned in, but I can highlight text, copy and paste into Word - it comes up in all different sized fonts, however. I downloaded it with Vuze (used to be Azureus). My next step is to try converting some other books. Your comments are most valuable
Thanks - Karma is on its way.

Fair comment, JSW

That's a fair comment - is there a thread around copyright, what is and isn't OK, and how we can know?

Thanks

In most countries, if the author is still alive, or died after 31st December 1938, then the work is still in copyright.

In Canada the relevant date is 31st December 1958.

In the USA, some works published before 1964 are out of copyright anyway, and all works published before 1923 are out of copyright.
