No I'm sure of anything. I remember nothing of this particular library or any other come to that.

But what have I said makes you think the library is a copy?

The library is on a usb external hard drive. It would have been created there. I use these drives when I run out of SATA cables for more drive.

I've just brought the thing to a different computer is all. And looked at it for the first time really.

Have you checked the drive? It might be failing. If it's not and you don't remember anything about creating the library or what programs might have been running while you created it, then we will never know what caused the corruption.

No I haven't checked it. But it is fairly new.

I just wanted to know if Calibre should have a copy of every book in a library rather than just a link. I got my answer: it should.

That's the point: 'should'. But it looks like it can happen that it doesn't so my take home lesson from all this is to check the library as soon as I've created it. And, I guess, every time I add to it.

I'll settle for that.

Is it normal for 'fix' to be marked 'not responding' while the blue circle continues? That means it is working or it means it isn't and we should shut it down?

Yes, it opens explorer to empty folders. Mostly. But not every time.

I mean they're not always empty. Some books are there. Pdf's. They open.

It is the ones that pop the error we are concerned with. Calibre says there shold (still be) a PDF, you say Empty
BTW were there any files there (cover.jpeg, metadata.opf). Even an 'empty book' has those.

Yup
The generic (blue) cover is one give away
the one with the OPF (only) could be a valid 'empty book' that you did not download/ drop a cover for

FWIW A 'empty book' is how I documented my 900 Paperbacks (tag: <in paper Library>. That is perfectly valid. Another use is a 'Wish List' (futures or things to buy)

I find it odd that anyone would have a library of 22,656 books on a USB device and be uncertain of how it got there - dark matter perhaps.

Where did I put that (folder/file or the whole removable media)!

I also find it strange, unless the OP has a habit to download dozens of articles and webpages every day. I did it in paper days. I had mountains of newspaper clippings... which I never read again. So I gave up. I still have those clippings (can't make myself to throw them away), but I don't download anything now unless I'm absolutely certain I want to look at it again in the future. There are perhaps a couple of hundred such documents in all.

I learned the hard way to always check that the disc is actually in the case when buying from thrift shops. Perhaps something like that happened to you?
