-2 FREE by Robert W. Walker at Amazon:

-The author has been published by Berkley, Jove, Leisure, Zebra, etc.

(1) Absolute Instinct (Instinct series - #11) - Robert W. Walker [Crime Thriller]

-This book was previously published by Berkley in 2005.

Amazon US---Amazon UK

(2) Brain Stem - Robert W. Walker [SF/Medical/Thriller]

Amazon US---Amazon UK

Quote:
ABSOLUTE INSTINCT:

The murder was so appalling even a hardened agent like FBI medical examiner Dr. Jessica Coran was shocked--the spinal cord had been literally ripped from the woman's back.

Ghastly as it was, it wasn't unique. A man had already been convicted of killing his wife in the exact same fashion. Is the doomed death-row prisoner innocent?

There's only one thing for Jessica to do: Find the real killer.

That means following a gruesome trail of carnage, victim by victim, straight into the absolute darkness of a madman's inescapable fantasies. Watch your back, Jessica...

BRAIN STEM:

GENIUS...

He is a brilliant neurosurgeon, the "boy genius" whose research into the workings of the human brain has gained him worldwide renown. He himself had been the subject at birth of an incredible medical experiment, one which had succeeded beyond the wildest dreams of the medical profession.

..OR MADMAN?

But now he has overstepped the boundaries of that profession, carrying on his own experiments in a manner so bizarre as to be inconceivable to the mind of the average man. His patients are no longer patients, but helpless victims, their brains controlled by his psychic and technological powers. He will sacrifice anyone or anything to his manic obsession. He has become an agent of death rather than a saver of lives. He must be stopped. But how, and by whom...?

Free from New Pulp Press - Rabid Child by Pete Risley.

Quote:
Desmond Cray just wants to be left alone. Homeless and friendless, he skulks around town scavenging for food and peeping on unsuspecting women. But his life of anonymity is threatened when a foster mother from his past sees him huddled in the rain and insists he return to her house. There, Desmond enters into a nightmarish world of sin and depravity. Through his dealings with the strangely obsessive mother, an unpredictable nymphette, and a hyper-religious cripple, Desmond discovers a series of terrible secrets, the worst of which just might involve him.
Free The Emerald Lizard (Neal Rafferty New Orleans Mystery) by Chris Wiltz.

Quote:
Book 3 of the Neal Rafferty New Orleans Mystery series.

A phone call at midnight. A cocktail lounge on New Orleans’ West Bank. A young woman who wants to photograph prostitutes and re-create Bellocq’s famous Storyville portraits. And murder. These are the threads that lead private eye Neal Rafferty into a labyrinth of danger in the Crescent City…where crime is always hot, spicy, and full-flavored with suspense. The phone call is from his old girlfriend Jackie Silva. A loan shark named Bubba Brevna is threatening to collect from Jackie the traditional way…with pain. He’s already moved into her establishment—The Emerald Lizard—with a bouncer called Godzilla, some call girls, and a set of muscular twins with one brain between them who are running “chicken drop” contests on the dance floor. What Rafferty can’t foresee is that, within days, The Emerald Lizard will be torched and Jackie Silva will be dead; soon, the young photographer will be missing. Rafferty begins a dark journey of guilt, grief, and revenge amidst the stink of corruption that will send him into the deadly shadows of narrow streets and twisted hearts.
Two more free thrillers by Robert Walker from his Instinct series.

Bitter Instinct.

Quote:
FBI Medical Examiner Dr. Jessica Coran's talents have been requested in Philadelphia in the wake of a series of bizarre murders attributed to a maniac called The Poet. His calling card is a scroll of human parchment engraved with toxic verse.

For Jessica the most baffling aspect of the crimes is that no victims show signs of resistance, or even fear. Only she has the insight to rad between the Poet's lines, to decipher the meaning of his deranged work-in-progress, and to stop him before his final stroke of insane genius.

(This book is eighth in Robert W. Walker's Instinct series. It was originally published in paperback.)
Blind Instinct.

Quote:
FBI Medical Examiner Dr. Jessica Coran and Inspector Richard Sharp have been enlisted to spearhead the investigation of a series of crucifixion murders- a bizarre rash of ritual killings in London's underground.

The madman has left a trail of carnage unequaled in the history of serial crime. But he has also left no clues to his identity, or to his unfathomable motive.

It begins as a terrifying challenge for Coran and Sharpe. What it becomes is an invitation to enter the deep abyss of a killer's mind, a chilling dare that will draw them closer than ever to the nature of evil and the rapture of death at the dawn of a new millennium.

(This book is seventh in Robert W. Walker's Instinct series. It was originally published in paperback.)

Thanks for the listing.

'Blind Instinct' looks like a real stinker - apparently a book readers love to hate, perhaps THE book that would cause an author to hang up his quill in embarrassment.

Those horrible reviews are quite amusing to read.

His post was helpful to me and unless you know some secret motivation that the rest of us don't, I have no idea why you'd think it was mean-spirited.

I don't download Walker's books, but Dr. Drib's post got me to click the link so I could read the bad reviews and I got a chuckle from Publishers Weekly's flowery language (since they couldn't just come out and say "the book is crap"): "With this seventh entry, Walker's series about FBI forensic pathologist Dr. Jessica Coran moves from original paperback to hardcover, presumably in a bid to absorb some of the Patricia Cornwell overflow. But turgid writing, heavy-handed atmospheric padding and a plot swollen with predictable turns would seem to seriously limit those aspirations."

So thanks for the laugh, Dr. Drib.

Any information that I receive about a book is helpful. I will make up my mind what to do with it. This is what these forums are for. It's not just a place to list books (freebies or otherwise) that are available.

I took his post as a joke at all the bad posts Dr. Drib referenced to, not an actual post against Dr. Drib.

And speaking of funny....this SP author is very popular in the UK. Now she's done a satire of e-publishing, about a group of indie authors who meet on a Kindle forum and get together on a remote island house...Lots of 'in' jokes about the indie writer scene & the reviewers they love to hate. Really pretty cute, although IMO could be cut by at least a third. But then, everybody's an editor nowadays...

Pompomberry House by Rosen Trevithick

A writer's retreat seemed the perfect chance for Dee Whittaker to take her mind off her marital difficulties. However, she meets five of the most hideous writers ever to have mastered a QWERTY keyboard, and her problems quickly multiply. Things escalate further when the handyman winds up dead.

After fleeing from the island, Dee attempts to get her life back on track but begins to notice that something strange is going on. The stories written on the island are coming true and hers is next - complete with a murder. Her estranged husband makes an unlikely sidekick as the two of them try to stop the literary copycat killing an innocent woman.

Packed with topical references, 'Pompomberry House' provides a satirical look at the emerging world of indie publishing.

Re: Blind Instinct. The reviews at Goodreads are actually quite decent: 60 ratings averaging 3.85. Don't believe I've seen such a difference in ratings between Amazon and Goodreads.

I don't have a problem with comments about books on this thread. Publisher's Weekly tactful review was fun to read.

Another repeat freebie from Robert W. Walker - Cold Edge.

Quote:
In the dark corners of Houston's urban night world, Detective Lucas Stonecoat and police psychiatrist Meredyth Sanger have come across another prostitute mutilated by the Scalper--a killer who has turned a primitive act of barbarism into a grisly, modern-day ritual.

The crimes have cut deep into Stonecoat's heart and soul. He understands their infamous place in history. But even Stonecoat can't fathom how far this elusive savage will go to fulfill an ancient tribal instinct...

(This book is third in Robert W. Walker's Edge series. It was originally published in paperback.)
Two more free thrillers from Endeavor Press: Red Alert by Colin Dunne.

Quote:
Meet Joe 'High Risk' Hussy. An ex-Secret Service agent and a private detective with a biting wit, he is a man who inhabits an extremely violent world.

When Richard Noble disappears after getting mixed up with a terrorist network his brother enlists Hussy's help.

But Hussy, who trained with the SAS 'Hooligans', quickly realises this is no ordinary missing persons case - and he is going to need every survival skill he learned in the special forces to stay alive.

As his search takes him from the slums of Liverpool to the Canadian Rockies, Hussy enlists the help of a high-class hooker and a superstar sniper who packs a firearm in his golf bag.

Nothing will stop Hussy getting the answers he need - except death itself.
Flight 103 by Juval Aviv.

Quote:
Strap up for Flight 103....The Most Terrifying Ride in History.

In the Gulf, an Iranian passenger jet is shot out of the sky...and no one knows why.

In Beirut, four hostages are taken prisoner...and no one knows why.

Over Lockerbie, Flight 103 is bought down in the worst terror attack for years...and no one knows why.

What links all three events?

Sam Woolfman is about to find out.

And the former Mossad agent is about to be plunged into the most deadly conspiracy of his career.

From London to Tehran, from the Vatican to the Pentagon, dark forces are at work. As Sam Woolfman starts to unravel the mystery, a global power-play of terrifying proportions is set in motion. On the run, Sam knows that the information he has uncovered may cost him his life - and the life of the woman he loves.

Thanks, NightBird.

'Red Alert' sounds like my kind of book. It concerns hookers, snipers and slums.... and a private detective. (I hope the latter doesn't take away from the mix!)

One of the best mystery thrillers around this year is Linda Prather's Bet You Can't ... Find Me. On offer for only $0.99.

“Imagine a killer who can kill at will from a distance. No gun, no weapon. Nothing more than a thought."
Catherine Mans has the ability to see and hear what others can’t. With the help of Homicide Sergeant Cody Allen, she’s turned that talent into a successful profession as a psychic consultant.
But Catherine’s past is coming back to haunt her. Someone is threatening the lives of everyone she loves.
Nine bodies have been discovered, and Catherine is the FBI’s prime suspect.
To prove her innocence, she must unravel the secrets of her past, and answer the challenge of a deranged psychic.
Bet you can’t…FIND ME!

I didn't see this on a quick search, so a free one at Amazon:

Libby Fischer Hellmann - Doubleback (PI Georgia Davis Series 02)

http://www.amazon.com/Doubleback-Geo...dp/B002SG7OWG/

Quote:
Little Molly Messenger is kidnapped on a sunny June morning. Three days later she's returned, apparently unharmed. Molly's mother, Chris, is so grateful to have her daughter back that she's willing to overlook the odd circumstances.

A few days later, the brakes go out on Chris's car.

An accident? Maybe. Except that it turns out that Chris, the IT manager at a large Chicago bank, may have misappropriated three million dollars. Not convinced that his daughter is safe, Molly's father hires PI Georgia Davis to follow the money and investigate Chris's death.

Doubleback, the sequel to the acclaimed Easy Innocence, reunites PI Georgia Davis with video producer Ellie Foreman (An Eye For Murder, A Picture Of Guilt, An Image Of Death, A Shot To Die For). The two women track leads from Northern Wisconsin to an Arizona border town, where illegal immigrants, smuggled drugs, and an independent contractor called Delton Security come into play. Georgia and Ellie go to great lengths to find the truth, and Georgia discovers that you can cross a line, but sometimes you have to double back.

Doubleback was chosen by the Great Lakes Bookseller Association as their Autumn, 2009 "Great Lakes Great Read."
