99 Cents Each on Some Rodale Titles. Markdowns Up to 96%!

Rodale sent me an email today telling me about a sale on several ebooks of theirs. All of them are 99 cents each.

Many of us are familiar with Rodale. I most frequently run across cookbooks and gardening books that they've published. However, they are involved heavily in publishing books in the health/wellness/fitness subgenres, too. Almost all of these 99 cent specials fall solidly within those categories.

Rodale's books consistently receive very high ratings. One thing that I find annoying, however, is that they do have a penchant for politicizing matters and expressing religious views (of what used to be called "New Age" kinds of stuff) in their books. You'll find that in some of the books that I'm going to list below.

I looked for a webpage at Rodale's website that told about the sale, but couldn't find one. What I'm going to do is to list all of the books and their respective webpages, along with their digital list prices so that you can see what bargains that they are. They are marked down up to 96% of the digital list prices!:
The Honest Life. By Jessica Alba. http://www.amazon.com/Honest-Life-%C...dp/B00AFU6252/. $22.99.

Tone It Up. By Katrina Scott & Karena Dawn. http://www.amazon.com/Tone-Up-Days-F...dp/B00RKO8H18/. $24.99.

Finding Yourself in the Kitchen: Kitchen Meditations and Inspired Recipes from a Mindful Cook. By Dana Velden. http://www.amazon.com/Finding-Yourse...dp/B00WTETGMI/. $19.99.

Whole Body Intelligence: Get Out of Your Head and Into Your Body to Achieve Greater Wisdom, Confidence, and Success. By Steve Sisgold. http://www.amazon.com/Whole-Body-Int...dp/B00RKRB38Y/. $19.99.

Sugar Smart Express: The 21-Day Quick Start Plan to Stop Cravings, Lose Weight, and Still Enjoy the Sweets You Love! By Anne Alexander & Julia VanTine. http://www.amazon.com/Sugar-Smart-Ex...dp/B00RKO8GOQ/. $21.50.

Easy Breezy Miracle: A Powerful, Exciting & Simple Guide to Creating an Extraordinary Life. By Emmanuel Dagher. http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Breezy-Mi...dp/B013T3X5OM/. $9.99.

The Bicycling Big Book of Cycling for Beginners: Everything a new cyclist needs to know to gear up and start riding. By Tori Bortman. http://www.amazon.com/Bicycling-Big-.../dp/B00FWT9IKW. $21.99.

The Men's Health Little Book of Exercises: Four Weeks to a Leaner, Stronger, More Muscular You! By Adam Campbell. http://www.amazon.com/Mens-Health-Li...dp/B00MU1ZP9I/. $17.99.

The Runner's World Big Book of Running for Beginners: Lose Weight, Get Fit, and Have Fun! By Jennifer Van Allen & 4 more. http://www.amazon.com/Runners-World-...dp/B00DVF12KS/. $21.99.

The Women's Health Little Book of Exercises: Four Weeks to a Leaner, Sexier, Healthier You! By Adam Campbell. http://www.amazon.com/Womens-Health-...dp/B00MU1ZPAW/. $17.99.

In addition to Amazon Kindle mobis, the email that I received showed all of the above books being available as Nooks and iBooks. They are also available at Google Play in whatever format that they sell their ebooks in there.

FREE Pdf (and Other Formats) on Sport of Baseball, Courtesy of the National Archives.

The National Archives and Records Administration (usually shortened to the "National Archives") "is an independent agency of the United States government charged with preserving and documenting government and historical records and with increasing public access to those documents, which comprise the National Archives" (Wikipedia). They not only preserve and document government and historical records, however, they also publish a handful of books, booklets, and such like.

This free pdf ebook, entitled The National Pastime in the National Archives, comes courtesy of the National Archives. The National Archives' collection on baseball is so broad and deep that this book serves well as just a general introduction to it. There is quite a bit of text but the book is made up primarily of photos and illustrations, as you might expect from the title of the book.

The thought occurs to me that when you read [past tense] that the ebook comes from the National Archives, you automatically thought "dry and boring." Let me assure you that it isn't! I was fascinated by (okay, I admit it) the pictures, and I don't even like baseball!

There is no pagination in the book, but I suspect that the ebook is about 150 pages long.

Here's the place to go to directly download the pdf ebook. If you need or want it, you can also get it in ePub, for iPad, iPhone, Android, Nook, SONY Reader or other mobile devices or readers (I hope that that includes Kindle), or iPhone, iPad or iPad touch, or for Scribd. I suggest that you start here, where you can get the links for those.

The Remainder of the FREE SparkNotes from the SparkNotes Website.

About a week ago, I posted two free SparkNotes--one of the Odyssey and one of the Iliad--from the SparkNotes.com website.

I believe the following to be all of the rest of the free SparkNotes from the website. I think that all of the free SparkNotes were provided in cooperation with the LiveScribe and U.S. Cellular corporations, as noted on the cover page of the SparkNotes.

All of these are pdf files again.

There are many more SparkNotes available on SparkNotes' website which are online and not, so far as I can tell, available as free ebooks.

This book is somewhat technical.

Title: The Future of the Internet and How to Stop It.
Format: Pdf.
Author(s): Jonathan L. Zittrain.
Publisher: Yale University Press.
Pages: x 342.
Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): 3.6 (24); 3.75 (669) at GoodReads.
Price: $0.00.
Lowest Price at Amazon if available there: (digital) $9.99.
Book Description (Amazon):
This extraordinary book explains the engine that has catapulted the Internet from backwater to ubiquity—and reveals that it is sputtering precisely because of its runaway success. With the unwitting help of its users, the generative Internet is on a path to a lockdown, ending its cycle of innovation—and facilitating unsettling new kinds of control.

IPods, iPhones, Xboxes, and TiVos represent the first wave of Internet-centered products that can’t be easily modified by anyone except their vendors or selected partners. These “tethered appliances” have already been used in remarkable but little-known ways: car GPS systems have been reconfigured at the demand of law enforcement to eavesdrop on the occupants at all times, and digital video recorders have been ordered to self-destruct thanks to a lawsuit against the manufacturer thousands of miles away. New Web 2.0 platforms like Google mash-ups and Facebook are rightly touted—but their applications can be similarly monitored and eliminated from a central source. As tethered appliances and applications eclipse the PC, the very nature of the Internet—its “generativity,” or innovative character—is at risk.

The Internet’s current trajectory is one of lost opportunity. Its salvation, Zittrain argues, lies in the hands of its millions of users. Drawing on generative technologies like Wikipedia that have so far survived their own successes, this book shows how to develop new technologies and social structures that allow users to work creatively and collaboratively, participate in solutions, and become true “netizens.”

I didn't recognize the name Berett-Koehler. So, as I am wont to do, I went to their website and started rummaging around to see if I could find some freebies. Turns out, I did.

#1--Sign up for their newsletter. They say that every month's issue will have a new free ebook offer in it. When you go to their website the first time, there will be a popup appearing where you can sign up. Their website is www.bkconnection.com.

#2--Join their "community" and you'll have your choice of one of ten different ebooks (pdf only, it appears). On their homepage, there is a box at the extreme top righthand corner where you can take care of that. Alternatively, just go directly to this webpage where you can sign up. You'll have an opportunity to see all ten ebook choices, should you wish to do that before you join.

I love these publishers who apparently like to give away free ebooks!

Thanks for your post. It informed me of the current Humble Bundle deal and set me on the path to learning about the Berrett-Koehler freebies.

Humble Bundle is as safe as any other reasonably reliable retailer website. I've been buying stuff from them for years without any noticeable problems. Here's their Wikipedia entry with more info on their background, if you're interested.

If you don't want to enter your CC info directly, you can pay via Paypal or Amazon Payments, or even Bitcoin if you prefer. They'll charge you in USD.

If you decide to only get the lowest pay-what-you-want tier or the better-than-average just to try the books out, you can later upgrade to the top tier to get all the books, by topping up your original pledge directly from the weblink you get to your downloads. Just click on the "Like what we're doing?" link to expand the drop-down, and then use the Custom Amount field to adjust your total combined payment to the tier you want (if your new total is below the minimum for a certain level, it will warn you that you'll be missing out on certain titles and tell you how much extra you need to add to get them). NB: don't use the "buy as gift" option if you're expecting to maybe top up your pledge. Apparently, they hide the gift amounts paid, and the recipients can't adjust them.

If you create an account with them, the links to all your purchases will be maintained in your library automatically. ETA: if you want to do the topping-up, you have to do it within either 30 days of initial purchase, or 30 days of the bundle offer's expiry date, I forget which. Either way, it's for a limited window of time that I usually do during the second week, after the extra books added to the middle tier have been revealed.
