Dickens, Charles: A Christmas Carol (illus-Rackham). v1. 01 Dec 2016

A Christmas Carol By Charles Dickens (1812–1870)
Illustrated by Arthur Rackham (1867–1939)

------------------
A Christmas Carol was first published in 1843. This “Rackham” edition first published 1915.

Text is in the public domain worldwide because the author died more than 100 years ago, and it was published before 1923. The illustrations are in the public domain in the USA, and in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less.
------------------

From the acknowledged Grand Master of Victorian-age fiction, author of such classics as David Copperfield, The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, and A Tale of Two Cities: the perennial Christmas favorite, A Christmas Carol.

This novella tells the story of bitter, miserly old Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation into a gentler, kindlier man after visitations by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come.

Nearly 175 years after its 1843 debut, A Christmas Carol remains popular – having never been out of print – and has been adapted many times to film, stage, opera, and other media.

The book was written at a time when the British were examining and exploring Christmas traditions from the past as well as new customs, and it influenced many aspects of Christmas that are celebrated today in Western culture, such as family gatherings, seasonal food and drink, dancing, games, and a festive generosity of spirit. Many social commentators credit the book with inspiring notable acts of generosity and charity.

A tale to make the reader laugh and cry – to open his hands, and open his heart to charity even toward the uncharitable … a dainty dish to set before a King.” (—Athenaeum magazine, review contemporary to the book’s first publication.)

* * *

For this special 1915 edition, the incomparable artist Arthur Rackham provided 12 full-page color images, several full-page line drawings, and chapter decorations.

There are several versions of this book already in the MobileRead library, and HarryT's Dickens editions are definitive, but this one is for fans of the wonderful art of Arthur Rackham. Get in the season's spirit now.
