wont open new installation or remove old

whenever I try to open my Calibre program I get the error message "error code 1" "failed to import site module". When I try to remove the present program or install a new version I get the error message that a network error occurred while attempting to read from the file. Can anyone explain in simple English (I'm not a computer geek) what the problem is?

Mike,
Did you ever get this figured out? I'm running into a similar problem. I was running CL.08 from the Ubuntu repos. I decided to update but ran into nothing but problems. I think it's a glibc version problem common to linux and a pain in the a** to figure out how to install correctly. Now I can't reinstall the old version or use the new one.
Any ideas, if you figured out your problem? Thanks.

Mint 13.
ES, I'm willing to do pretty much anything to fix it but don't want to risk the 5000 ebooks in my library. If you could suggest how to protect them before any changes I'd appreciate it

One was some sort of Tuple error the other was Errnor[?] 5 I/O

ES, While waiting I used the updater script again for the third time and it re-installed. Seems to work now but I'm still playing. One thing is reading pdfs takes forever to load. I'm using Mint's default pdf viewer which works a lot better. Thanks

@trefall
The Library, Preferences and the program are separated.

Once created, Libraries and user preferences have to be deleted by hand.

Removing the program leaves all creations behind.
At worst, you may need to point the new installed version to the old Library with the 'Create/Switch' option on the Library icon in Calibre

Thanks Ducks. I checked the # of books and I think some may not have transferred. Although I edited duplicates last night before I updated so I think there may not be a problem.

@trefall - I suspect you already know this, but for the benefit of future readers of the thread.

The calibre viewer is an EPUB viewer. If you configure calibre to use its viewer for formats other than EPUB it does a 'mini' conversion. Conversions can be slow, and 'mini' ones often result in poor quality output, especially PDF conversions. Uncheck Preferences->Behaviour->Use internal viewer for->PDF, and then calibre will execute the PDF reader you have defined in your OS configuration.

Incidentally for PDF's the default for this setting is unchecked. I suspect most users would leave it that.
