iPad NYT: Sports Illustrated Introduces iPad App

Each issue costs $4.99, the same price as an issue of the Wired app released recently; no subscription pricing is yet available. New issues will be available each Wednesday morning. Tools are available to share the contents of the magazine through Facebook and Twitter, and by e-mail.

Right now, the video (and the live Web feed) requires an Internet connection. Christopher Hercik, the magazine’s creative director, said that a goal was to minimize the download time, trying to keep it to around four minutes, which meant that the videos could not be part of the download, at least for now. Including the video of the Macon baseball team in the file, for example, would have increased the download time substantially.

That is pretty weird; if you are trying to differentiate an iPad magazine from just another website....why require an Internet connection?

I guess it's simply that you can have a much slicker user interface with an app than with a website.
