If somebody says " Look, a cow!" I expect to see something with horns, a tail to scare flies away and eating grass, it might even be an ox, but definitely not a whale (male or female)

I remember reading once that the sea cow was the origin of the mermaid legend. I can't remember where I read it, but the author commented that this was probably more of an indicator of how long sailors of yore spent at sea without female companionship than of the beauty of the sea cow

Only because the round-ups are so difficult. Ever try to shout "Yippee eye kaiyay" when you're at 25 meters down? The only way to be heard is to first blow air into your glove, then clamp it over your mouth and speak. By then all the horsies have run (swam?) away, and you have to start all over again. It's probably more healthy as I'm guessing that horses (unlike cows, pigs and chickens) aren't pumped full of growth hormone to make them grow quicker and not pumped full of antibiotics to stave of the illness that you tend to see when animals are raised in inhumane factory conditions. Yummy.

But where are these horses coming from? In the US, it's the old and sick who are slaughtered. Also unfortunately many race horses end up at the slaughterhouse. And there are several drugs that are legal for racing purposes. So would horse meat be healthier? Dunno. But as someone pointed out, horse meat has less fat than beef ...
Bottom line of this story though is mislabeling. However it happened, things other than beef were in a product that was supposed to just be beef. |
