Pain, Barry: Wilhelmina in London. v1. 26 Dec 2022

This was first serialized in The Grand Magazine in 1905 as “The Lone Hand.”

“Each chapter relates an adventure in the career of a penniless but brave and resourceful girl with no one to depend upon but herself. On the death of her father, a clever but shiftless literary ne’er-do-weel, she collects all the little property that is available and boldly sets forth to seek her fortune in London.”
( — Grand Magazine summary)

Wilhelmina tries her hand at many things to make a penny. Among other ventures, she is hired to impersonate a dying woman’s daughter, offers advice to the lovelorn for a fee, gets involved with spiritualism as a medium, learns to be an automobile mechanic and driver…

=============
Barry Eric Odell Pain (28 Sep. 1864 – 05 May 1928) was an English journalist, poet, humorist and writer. During his lifetime, he was perhaps best known as a writer of parody and lightly humorous stories, but now is also noted for his tales touched with fantasy, horror, and the supernatural. He also wrote stories of mystery and suspense. His humor has been characterized by some modern critics as “a surreal forerunner to Monty Python.”
