If I open an epub in Kindle Previewer, then I need to export it as a Books(*.mobi) file, right?

I downloaded KindleGen for Mac, but it won't open.
Yes. You should get a choice of kpf (reopens in Kindle Preview without needing conversion), mobi (dual mobi with mobi and azw3 (KF8) and source) and .azk for old iOS devices.

On Windows you open it in a DOS window, aka Command Prompt; probably also Power Shell.

It is not interactive. In a terminal, you type kindlegen and any arguments and the epub file name and it produces the kindle version. Unless you have a good reason, you should give it the argument to not append source.

Screaming and kicking! Just kidding, although I still have fond memories of the % unix prompt. I can't remember why I was using KindleGen instead Kindle Previewer. In any event I no longer make kindle books.

Ah-hah, I overlooked that in your response. That's why I used KindleGen, because including the epub makes the resulting mobi file huge compared to its size without the epub.

I was going to ask if there's a way to confirm that an epub with a mobi extension has been saved in the multi-Kindle format, but I guess the fact that it's 52 MB vs 24 MB for the original says it all.

I got tired of Hitch hectoring me about supporting ancient Kindles. Just kidding Hitch!

They were books I uploaded here. Now I just upload epub books. If people need the kindle version they can use calibre to do the conversion, and have calibre format it the way they like; e.g., ragged right versus fully justified.

Interesting. I started out on Sigil, which is still my main platform. However, it looks like Calibre has really been beefing up its features. I'm increasingly using it to do various things.

For editing epubs I think it's about even between Sigil and Calibre.

I still do the majority of my editing in Sigil but I also use the calibre editor. Each of them is able to handle some tasks better than the other.

Instead, I found evidence linking it to my backyard - Seattle - as well as Israel. Of course, saying anything bad about Israel makes you a you-know-what.

The amazing thing is that I can discuss my book more freely in communist China than I can in the U.S. When I tried to order T-shirts and business cards promoting my book from companies in the U.S. and Europe, my accounts were banned. So I ordered them from China.

So much for free speech.
Amazon has refused to publish ALL books about COVID. It has sweet FA to do with conspiracy theories. Academic works, medical works, etc. They flatly stated that they would not aid profiteering and it's not only books. They're easing those restrictions now--Peter Kent just had a CV book published--but again, NOTHING to do with you or your book or your theories.

So, it's entirely likely that you can, in fact, publish there.

I would add, for the benefit of anyone else coming along--if you haven't had to provide tech support, to normal, everyday people, who try to download and read eBooks, yourself, in the past, you're in for a VERY RUDE SHOCK. Everybody thinks it's all easy magic; the person buys the eBook from you, you deliver it via digital cart and bob's-yer-uncle. Well, just hold onto your panties. Amazon delivers those files wirelessly to the consumer and that's what they EXPECT FROM YOU. And when it doesn't happen, you wanna know how many people actually know what side-loading is, much less how to make it happen? About 1 out of 25, by my count (and we've done >5,000 eBook projects over the last decade.) At my shop, the highest expense for me, business-wise, are my bookmakers, obviously--but then, the next in line is unpaid tech support. What I pay, to my crew, to provide that, even though we flatly say that we don't.

So, lotsa luck with that. If you're going to sell eBooks from your own website, be prepared for the Tech Support that comes with it. Don't say you weren't warned. ;-)

>Always upload epub2 to Amazon KDP.

That's what I do. I first build the epub for Draft2Digital and other avenues, complete with included cover. Then I delete the cover file and image and upload that version of the epub to the KDP. I have been doing this for eight years and never had the slightest problem.

But you are quite right that you can't sell your book through Amazon, which blocks any self-published book (not endorsed by Elon Musk!) that refers to Covid-19. That's a business decision. It may be altruistic but I suspect it's mercenary because Mr Bezos doesn't want to offender Mr Xi.
