What is Audible Channels?

Audible Channels provides on-demand listening to original audio series, plus playlists handcrafted for every interest and refreshed daily, drawing from news, comedy shows, articles, talks and more!

Audible.com, Amazon Prime members, and those who share an Amazon Household with an Audible.com or Prime member have access to unlimited Channels listening as part of their membership benefits.

Amazon Prime members additionally get access to our Prime-exclusive audiobook channels featuring full-length audiobooks from best sellers, family favorites, celebrity-narrated classics, and more.

You can access Channels through the Audible app for iOS, Android, and Windows 10. Follow and listen to as many channels as you like! You can stream channels content or download individual items within a channel for offline listening. For the latest information on Channels, click or tap here.

Audible Channels for Prime now joins the growing list of all-you-can-eat benefits for Prime members including guaranteed unlimited fast, free shipping, unlimited access to Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Photos, early access to Lightning Deals and more. Prime members can access Audible Channels for Prime by downloading the Audible app for iOS, Android, and Windows 10. Prime members get full access to Audible Channels just like Audible members. In addition, Prime members also get access to Prime exclusive content not available for Audible members.

The Prime exclusive content consists of a rotating selection 50+ full-length audiobooks in nine different categories. Each channel has anywhere from 5 to 7 audiobooks. Content is available for streaming only. Downloads are not allowed.

Audible Channels is only available via the Audible apps for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. It's not available for Amazon's devices - Fire, Phone, Echo, Fire TV, etc.

There is a workaround to get audiobooks from Channels to play on Echo devices. Start the book on an Android, iOS, or Windows device and then say "Alexa, read my book". Alexa will then start playing the last book listened to.

I'm quite curious about the full-length books available only to Prime members. I let Prime lapse, but I know my sister's password. I even have a Fire tablet signed into her account, but Amazon in its wisdom won't let its best customers use Channels. I don't feel like signing out of my Audible account on my various devices

So I'm wondering what would happen if I sideloaded the Audible app from an Android device onto the fire tablet? I'll give it a try unless someone who's already gone that route says it's a non-starter. Falling that, I guess I can resurrect a defunct device.

Even absent Channels, I'd love to get the Android Audible app on my Fire thingies; it's got so much more functionally than the native player.

Thank you, Brian! My curiosity is assuaged and there's nothing sufficiently compelling to induce me to re-up with Prime.

As a side note, I couldn't get the Audible app to load on a Fire device, but that doesn't mean someone more apt than I couldn't manage it.

I randomly opened Ender's Game from my phone, stopped it, said to my friend Alexa "Alexa play Audible" (thanks for the trick Mr Monkey!). Read the book a very long time ago, and was delighted when I started this version of it that it was performed by Jim Dale. Sorry, Kindle, you get a rest break today!

I suspect this is more for people who don't already listen to audio books, rather like Amazon did with Video. Older or PD titles that don't have a lot of perceived value but that people are willing to give it a try. The downside is that this are basically stream only titles, rather than titles you can download, so listening in the car is going to chew up your data plan.

Unfortunately, they seem to have removed the option to purchase these audiobooks, or at least they did with the Moon is a Harsh Mistress. I prefer to buy rather than stream.

Under the "How to Listen" button click "More Options" and select "Want to buy this instead?" and it can be purchased. (at least that's what I get on a PC using Chrome)

There are quite a few audiobooks in the Prime Exclusive content that I'd listen to and the streaming only feature is not a drawback for me since I'll be streaming it on my Echo.

For me, there are no negatives for the Prime Exclusive content.

Interestingly, when I searched for The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, the page didn't have the More Options link. However, when I clicked on the book link, that page did have the More Options link.

Oddly that book is one of the few Heinlein books that isn't available in ebook, yet it's one of my favorites.

You can also get there via amazon. I ended up buying it.

Amazon’s new ‘Audible Channels’ Prime benefit is great — but it’s not available on Amazon tablets (Update: They’re working on it)

It should've been implemented on Fire and Echo devices from day one. Better late than never.

[Update, Saturday afternoon: After this story was published, an Amazon spokesperson contacted GeekWire to add to the company’s previous statement: “We are planning to bring this feature to Fire tablets in the coming months,” the company now says.]

Audible Channels, which initially rolled out in July, is available in the Audible app for iOS, Android and Windows 10, but it’s not available on Amazon’s own Fire tablets, as a GeekWire reader pointed out on our story about the new Prime benefit.

Amazon treats Audible audiobooks as native content on its tablets, letting users download them directly to the device, much as they download e-books to Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets. It makes for a more seamless and integrated experience, but it also means that there’s no standalone Audible app to serve as a delivery mechanism for the Audible Channels service, as there is on non-Amazon devices.

When I asked about the situation, an Amazon representative confirmed this week, “Currently, you can access Audible Channels on iOS, Android, and Windows 10. We don’t have additional details to share at this time.” (See additional statement above.)
