Amazon Lives Up to Its Promise/Apology
Just got email today - the $30 refund for the Orwell book. Also $30 for a Harry Potter pirated edition (I just had to look!).
Given that the unknown person uploaded an estimated 150 titles, including Harry Potter, Ayn Rand, James Clavell, Stephen King, Clive Cussler, Heinlein, etc. - Amazon is in for some hefty cash-outs. Interestingly enough, unlike other manufacturer "refunds" Amazon offered a choice between a gift card for use on Amazon merchandise or an actual check - don't see that very often. |

This is a clever move by Amazon. Lots of people were vocal about boycotting the Kindle because they can remotely delete books and were sceptical about Bezos's promise not to do it again. These refunds are Amazon tying their hands against reneging on this promise as a signal to future customers that their ebooks wont removed without their permission.
