That clears things up a bit. I saw someone else on here that looked like a new member, but under their username (not sure what that little box is called, Status?) it said formerly suchandsuch. So he lost all his karma and posts.

No, you only change your name but you keep your number of posts and your karma. And if anyone has ever quoted you, in these quotes your name won't change, they show your former one.
