Leroux, Gaston: The Secret of the Night (illus). v1. 06 Nov 2021

A story of revolution, murder, and suspense from one of history’s finest detective novelists. In 1905, Joseph Rouletabille is employed by Czar Nicholas II of Russia to watch over one of his Generals whose life has been threatened by revolutionaries. Will the detective discover the identity of the double agent in time to foil the nefarious scheme?

This is the third in Leroux’s series of books about Rouletabille.

=============
Gaston Louis Alfred Leroux (6 May 1868 – 15 April 1927) was a French journalist and author of detective fiction. In the English-speaking world, he is best known for writing the novel The Phantom of the Opera (Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, 1910), which has been made into several film and stage productions of the same name, notably the 1925 film starring Lon Chaney, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical, and Joel Schumacher’s 2004 film based on the musical.

Leroux’s 1907 novel The Mystery of the Yellow Room is one of the most celebrated locked room mysteries; and his contribution to French detective fiction is considered a parallel to those of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the United Kingdom and Edgar Allan Poe in the United States.

Rouletabille chez le Tsar (Rouletabille and the Tsar) was first published in 1913; the English translation The Secret of the Night in 1914. This book is in the public domain where copyright is “Life+70” or less, and in the USA.
