Lonesome Dove is very highly recommended.

I also liked The Last Picture Show, book and movie.

I will admit that I preferred Streets of Laredo and The Last Picture Show to Lonesome Dove but overall, a very good author whose work I enjoyed.

RIP. Lonesome Dove is among my favorite books. The mini-series made from the book was also wonderful.

I loved Lonesome Dove.
I also read Terms of Endearment and....was not impressed, greatly prefer the movie.
I have other books by him to read still. Looking forward to them. A great author.

I just read Lonesome Dove a few months ago and it was really good, his only book I've read. I didn't know he also wrote The Last Picture Show and Terms of Endearment, both made into great films (especially The Last Picture Show, and we also just lost Cloris Leachman not so long ago who did a great job in that film), and he also worked on adapting the script for Brokeback Mountain, another great film.

Even if for some reason you were to hate the book, still see the movie. It is great.

McMurtry wrote a sequel, Texasville. It was turned into a film by the same director with the same cast, though I don't think either book or film quite lived up to their predecessor.
