Sony developed these screens, invested in Eink and has Joint Venture with Eink for a good while.
Sony is buying it for $200 at most. Sony is based in Japan, they are not socialists/communists to not to make a profit or to take a loss.

Sony buys wholesale, they have the size to negotiate with eInk as it opens up the market to the latter reducing their overheads. So they could go even below the 200. I'm not sure though if this capacitive wiring from the RP1 is made specifically for Sony or its part of the standard Eink offer.

Good and legitimate question. I think several factors are involved.
No one has ever told them straight to their face that their UI sucks.
Secondly, language barriers and the fact that westerners are strange and a pain in the ass to deal with. Talk disrespectfully and whatnot.
But most importantly programmers run rings around their managers who have zilch knowledge of code. "You want what? That's gonna take another six months, at least"

Sony cover

So what do people think about the cover that ships with the device? I received mine a few days ago.

Previously, I had been using the device without the cover, instead storing it in a BOOX MAX case designed for the previous DPT-S1.

I found that the device + zip-up case method is actually pretty convenient. Naked when in use, and zipped up when traveling.

Now, I've been using the Sony cover with the device, but I find it awkward. It makes the device heavier, obviously.

But it also increases the footprint. The DPT-RP1 can fit in the paper tray of a printer (it is digital paper, after all.)

Now, it can't make as tight a fit, cannot fit in with the rest of the actual paper.

Plus, the front cover likes to take up space on a desk, so I have to fold it behind the RP1. It also stains easily from any common greases (the RP1 doesn't).

It also feels flimsy.

So I'm thinking of reverting back to the naked RP1 + zip-up case. Your experience may differ. I just hope that the adhesive stands the test of time if I remove the device from the cover.

I have a S1 too. No problems at all.
How did you know that the battery was faulty? I haven't used mine at a long-enough stretch to really test the battery.

I have it connected to the PC a great deal, because I am putting documents on it. It sure likes to charge - red light was on for hours after only a few hours use.

Thanks for that info! I was debating whether I wanted to try to even get the cover, but these are exactly the reasons why I suspect I'd prefer the device as-is. It's so light that I don't worry about dropping it, whereas I wouldn't dare to walk around with my iPad Pro without a case. I was thinking of getting a padded envelope to carry the DPT in.

Yes, I'm surprised at the lack of discussion on the cover and other accessories (I haven't even opened the AC adapter yet).

The cover is big and somewhat awkward, and in terms of touch reminds me of some of those convertible tablet PCs that use very light, synthetic-feeling materials for the case/stand. It feels ultra-modern, but not robust.

I was doing surprisingly well with the naked + case combo, so I might revert back to that. Turns out there may have been no need to go with the cover. (I don't feel that it offers a lot of protection for the added weight/bulk/footprint).

Mind to share the case you're using for the RP1?

Cheers.

I like the device without the case. The weight and feel of the naked device is still very pleasing.

For protection, I've been using the 'Synthetic Leather iPad Pro (12.9 inch iPad) Sleeve by Dockem' at 9.99 on Amazon and am very happy with it. It fits like a glove. I ran my finger around the inside edge to stretch it a bit when it first arrived, but it has been perfect since.

I also attached the 'Apple Pencil Holder - Elastic Sticker Pocket - Peel N Stick' to hold the stylus. Also 9.99.

EDIT: Looks like the price has gone up a bit on each since I bought them, but still highly recommended for the DPTR1

I use the case when taking my RP1 out and around, but it is really quite sexy without. At home, I remove the case.

I really like the cover of the RP1. Never remove it and fold it on the back of the device while using it. Makes the device heavier.... hmm. My RP1 lies on the desk while I'm writing. Holding it in the hand isn't that hard, but that's maybe just the case for me. The case fits perfect and the magnetic mechanism to close it is a plus.

Fully charged and only standby. The device only lasts for 1 or 2 days. Didn't use it in this time or even switched it on. The replacement RP1 is working great.

I finally managed to get past this issue by reinstalling the Digital Paper app, and disabling a bunch of security safeguards. Kind of dumb that that's what you have to do in order to install the oh so secure DP app..

Which security safeguards did you disable to fix this problem?

That's alright. You've just gave Sony
permission to collect data not just from the Digital Paper itself but also from any device connected to the Digital Paper.

Yes, I'm surprised at the amount of discussion on the cover and other accessories instead of focusing on real problems.
