I decided to try an audio book and i hate it

I find that bad readers annoy me rather than put me to sleep. I much prefer to listen to a good book well narrated. Yeah, sometimes I stay in bed listening longer than is totally consistent with going to sleep, but 15 or 30 minutes of a good book are usually enough to get me tired enough that, when the book shuts off automatically, I can drift off shortly thereafter.

Works for me as well. But it makes listening to books I haven't read before in my bedroom more difficult.

I agree with everybody who said that the reader is very important when listening to an audiobook, and there are some really great readers out there (like Stephen Fry, Katherine Kellgren, Stefan Rudnicki or George Guidall to only mention a few).

The speed of an audiobook doesn't bother me because I have always been a fairly slow reader who likes to savor every word, so to speak. In English the speed of an audiobook matches exactly the speed with which I read. I read a bit faster in German, but I still like to listen to German books. Unfortunately, I find that most readers (even professionals) aren't nearly as good over here as some of the anglo-saxon narrators.

I had troubles getting into audiobooks when I first started listening. As others have said the narrator will either make or break an audiobook.

I listen when I am in the car on a long drive, working on the computer doing programming, playing certain video games, and on the long flights I have to do when I visit family on the other side of the country. That 5 to 6 hour flight goes quickly when I am listening to an audiobook.

the only advantage for an audio book is when driving, it is better than the radio and of course you can't read whilst at the wheel.

I used to read (before audiobooks) while riding my bicycle to school in junior high.

Or anytime when your hands or your eyes are occupied: washing dishes or gardening just to give a couple examples.

Listening to the radio can be dangerous for me. I once got pulled over for speeding whilst listening to a baseball game. My team was down by one in the last inning, bases were loaded and my favorite player was at bat with one out left! The crowd was roaring and as the tension grew my foot just pressed down harder and harder.

We won!!! And I got a ticket for doing 50 in a 35mph zone

Now I just listen to audio books

Problem with listening to an audio book before bed I end up relistening to the entire chapter the next day... I don't seem to remember a word of it!

No, but I slashed my Achilles tendon while trying to put down the kickstand while I was still moving and engrossed in my book.

My mother made me stop reading on my bike. She was probably right, but at the time I felt it was very unfair.

I have been known to read at red lights, but I would be afraid to read while driving or riding.
