Yup, always, definitely, capital first.

I don't mind the first letter of nicknames not being capitalized except when it comes time to use one as the first word of a sentence. Which is correct?

Since the proper (nick)name is lower-cased, that would override the usual rule of capitalizing the first word of the sentence.

Chicago Manual of Style: "Brand names that begin with a lowercase letter followed by a capital letter should retain the lowercase letter even at the beginning of a sentence or a heading."
Brand name ≡ Nickname - no? I think it was changed a few years ago accommodate iPhone, eBay etc, failure to comply is a capital crime BR |

Nonsense. Nicknames are proper nouns, not brand names. Where they appear on top of the avatar, they may be considered as a "title" and stylistic liberty applies, but in real sentences they should be subject to common grammar/spelling rules, so Bordovy, Pdurrant, et al., I'm sorry but you shall be capitalized, first word or not Personally, I'm more offended by being called "Jelby" (one ell) than "jellby" (lowercase). Darn, it's so frustrating to click on a thread looking forward to all the silly jokes one might crack - only to find that they've all been done already...
