Me too, but also some that really are classics, eg "Brideshead Revisited" and "Lolita".

I respectfully beg to differ - many of these titles are considered 20th C classics - and have been long awaited for in Kindle editions - esp. Bellow, Cheever, Sacks.

Something doesn't have to be well known to be a classic. These books are all well regarded and have stood the test of time. Being a classic is about quality.

John Cheever even has an important plotline in a episode of Seinfeld, it's even named after him, "The Cheever Letters".

I agree. I haven't read all of thse authors - but I have certainly heard of them, and think it's fair to call them 20th century classics. Though am surprised to see The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks in the list. Even if it's a great book - and I might even buy it to re-read it. I remember it was very fascinating.

Classic or not, 9.99 seems a little steep for something that long ago made the rounds of paperback.

I hope this signals more backlist books to come. Digitize 'em all, and I'll decide case by case whether they're worth $9.99. I'd gladly pay even more for some of 'em.

oh, Geoff, it surprises me,

Even more respectfully I dare remind you that:
Saul Bellow,
Spoiler:
native of Lachine, P.Q. (that is Quebec) but for the great part of his life living in Chicago (by the way, I know that you do not share the view of other followers of Her Majesty that keep looking upon the "colonies" with the same down look of General William Howe, 5th Viscount Howe, KB, PC), where many of the Bauhaus architects and designers took refuge, thus contributing to the rise of the windy city to the fame of one of most elegant and architectural towns in the Northern Emisphere,
was insigned of the Nobel prize for literature in 1976 with this motivation:

Spoiler:
"exuberant ideas, flashing irony, hilarious comedy and burning compassion... the mixture of rich picaresque novel and subtle analysis of our culture, of entertaining adventure, drastic and tragic episodes in quick succession interspersed with philosophic conversation, all developed by a commentator with a witty tongue and penetrating insight into the outer and inner complications that drive us to act, or prevent us from acting, and that can be called the dilemma of our age." His best-known works include The Adventures of Augie March, Herzog, Mr. Sammler's Planet, Seize the Day, Humboldt's Gift and Ravelstein. Widely regarded as one of the twentieth century's greatest authors, Bellow has had a "huge literary influence."

From Kindle Daily Nation...

Quote:
Update: Apparently Random House does feel strongly that it has legal arrows in its quiver to fight this development, and Random House spokesman Stuart Applebaum told Publisher's Marketplace this morning, "We are disappointed by Mr. Wylie's actions, which we dispute. Last night, we sent a letter to Amazon disputing their rights to legally sell these titles, which are subject to active Random House publishing agreements. Upon assessing our business options, we will be taking appropriate action."
