Another option that I personally prefer for getting rid of ads is a good hosts file. Reason I bring this up is it will take care of whatever browser or software you are using as it works at the network stack level of the OS. Also pretty much any OS with a TCP/IP stack can use a hosts file (I believe).

This is one of the most popular ones; http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

And here is a wiki page with a good description and links to various hosts files (Including an insanely large one on a French site.) ; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file

Firefox obviously has Adblock, which is highly regarded. Opera has a built in Block Content option, and Safari has an Adblock port. Internet Explorer has a couple of commercial and non-commercial alternatives but I'm not familiar with them.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
http://operawiki.info/OperaAdblock
http://safariadblock.sourceforge.net/

Me, I'm an old school Opera user and I've been using custom hosts files even longer. There is a debate as to benefit of blacklists today. Personally I'm with the school of thought that they are still great if you maintain them.

-MJ

Since mobileread helps pay for its hosting and all with the ads perhaps you should ignore this post

I found adblock and the accompanying Filter.G updater to really slow down my browser. (At least on the Mac didn't try it on XP). So, I removed it. I just ignore the adds anyway.

I always get a chuckle from the ad where you download a chapter, then pay $1.99 for each chapter after that. Short chapter books, such as the unmentionable Da Vinci Code, would end up costing a small fortune!

Or, another of his books, "Angels and Demons". I enjoyed it a lot. But yes -- lots of short chapters. Wouldn't want to buy by the chapter!

holden1, you must live in California. I think servers take a look at our IP addresses and know what region we live in and tailor the ads accordingly. The political ads I see, for example, are specific to my state. A lot of sites do this, e.g. Google search. Like Big Brother. Scary.

Yeah, dammit!! I don't want to see iRex ads!! I hate coming on to the MR site and getting force-fed ebook readers (other than the Kindle, of course).

You know .... I realized lately, that I simply do not see the ads anymore. Not at any site. They are just so much white noise. And, as for political ads?? I can honestly say that they do nothing at all to sway my vote. I do not make voting decisions based on advertising ... I also don't purchase products based on advertising.

Candidates ... I read as much as I can about them and their views and vote accordingly.

Products .... I generally go with something I've either had long experience using, or I get a chance to try something out at a friend's house, or a friend recommends it.

I never saw, heard or read, an advertisement that told me the whole truth (and nothing but ...). You think Proposition 8 is an abomination?? Then, do what I did ... vote against it.

I'm sorry about that, Holden1.

As zelda has explained, the site advertisements are chosen by Google Adsense.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AdSense

Allegedly, the Adsense program is sensitive to the page content. So, if someone mentions the novels of L Ron Hubbard then scientology ads are inflicted on us. A thread about avatars has a semi-permanent ad on creating your own avatar. I'm afraid that some people have been making humorous alternative election posts in the Lounge. This may conceivably have inadvertently triggered the offending (and offensive) advertisement.

MobileRead's policy is that we won't tolerate hate-speech of any kind. I can't speak for everybody, but I think that I would far rather not have advertisements that lead to a lack of toleration. I apologise for the annoyance caused to you.

I haven't seen the advertisement because I live in Europe. Google Adsense will show ads based on your location. It also thinks that a lot of single men frequent this site, given the occasional adverts for foreign brides.

I briefly had a US election advert, urging me to vote - guess AdSense didn't pick up on my IP addy!

But mostly I'm getting adverts for the Iliad and Windows Mobile DB SW
