On the image caching problem, could it be solved by putting a caching proxy server (squid for instance) between the feed mangler and the internet?

I don't know whether you have a particular problem that this doesn't solve, but I expect that the caching solution is pretty solid in such a product.

Nice solution. We'll still have to run a few things in the background though to make sure that there's always something in the cache.

Harry is right. The quality of the books he has created are through the roof good. Feedbooks is a great site though. I visit it often.
