GRAHAM GREENE!!! Yes, how very cool. My favorite favorite Graham Greene book - by far and away his best - is The Power and the Glory. Very cool book.

Also, here's some of my other all-time favorites. Note that I'm excluding nonfiction from this list, because nonfiction books can be fascinating for all kinds of reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of the writing

Lord of the Rings(THE SINGLE MOST AWESOME NOVEL OF ALL TIME)
1984
Ender's Game
The Time Machine
The Island of Dr. Moreau
For Whom the Bell Tolls (only thing by Hemingway I really like)
Somerset Maugham's short stories
and probably lots of others I can't think of right now, darn it...maybe I'll be back later

Graham Greene's Travels With My Aunt was hilarious too. Maggie Smith was great as Aunt Augusta in the movie, even though she was somewhat sanitized for the movie-going audiences and the ending was a cop-out.

Aunt Augusta:Steward! More champagne.
Steward:But we're just about to land.
Aunt Augusta:Then you'll have to hurry, won't you?

Edit: Actually, that quote is from the movie. I don't remember if it's in the book or not.

I read Gorky Park so long ago I can barely remember it now, except that it was snowy and good.

If you liked Presumed Innocent, read the recent sequel, Innocent. I really liked it a lot. It has that same tricky plot thing going on.

I really don't know about that one. I'm really leery about it. I haven't enjoyed anything he's written since Presumed Innocent, then a year or two ago he was giving praise on the back of a John Grisham novel, and now he's recycling his only good novel. When I first heard about Innocent I rolled my eyes. I really think his sales are slipping.

I just got it from the library. I'm looking forward to re-visiting the "Presumed Innocent" folks.

I really need to use the word 'really' less often. Sorry 'bout that, folks.

I use quite a lot, too - and other modifiers like just, perhaps, maybe, actually - it's a bad habit, but I'm trying to weed out the words while writing. Glad to know I'm not alone

Hi all,

5-star books... I guess they are the ones I recall most fondly for one or more reasons. Here goes...and in no particular order...

David Guterson's Snow Falling on Cedars
A. C. Clarke's Rendezvous With Rama
Frank Herbert's Dune
H. G. Wells' Time Machine, Invisible Man, and War of the Worlds
Greg Bear's Anvil of Stars and Forge of God
Caleb Carr's The Alienist
Iain Pears' An Instance of the Fingerpost
Stephen Donaldson's Lord Foul's Bane Trilogy

- and from my badly misspent youth, The Golden Keel by Desmond Bagley (why it was never made into a film is beyond me - it is a great caper story), Night Without End by Alistair MacLean, and for a plot that is near-impossible to explain, Barkley Mather's The Springers.

Cheers,

That may be, but it was still a page-turner for me. I definitely recommend it is you liked Presumed Innocent.

A very good novel. one of my four-and-a-half-star books, in fact.
