When will we see the Amazon Kindle ebook in Britain? - Page 2

This isn't a manufacturer restricting sales, but a retailer, and a retailer can certainly choose not to ship to other countries if they wish.

Look up pretty much any electronic item on Amazon UK (eg TV sets) and in the "Product Details" section at the bottom of the page it says:

Delivery Restrictions: This item can only be delivered within the UK

As other have said, I see a problem in selling books or making books available in different countries. But I don't see why a book reader couldn't be sold in all countries. Granted, the Kindle would lose much of its splendour without the wireless and Kindle store, but it's not useless, and I'm sure there are people who would like to have it anyway, starting with people who frequently travel to the US.

Well, you can buy a Kindle if you're keen enough. Get an American friend to buy one for you. Buy from from eBay. There are always ways. A heck of a lot of people here (myself included) had a Sony Reader in the days when it was only officially available in the US.

Why isn't it "officially" sold world-wide? That's a different question to which there are many answers, such as the expense of providing world-wide support. Those of us who bought the Sony Reader in its "US-only" days knew that we were effectively buying it without a warranty.

I've had my US Sony Reader here in Oz for going on 9 months now an I had to accept that I was buying it without warranty.
I know there are a number of Kindle owners here in Australia but why would you really bother as you are paying a good deal more for features that are useless outside the US. You are much better off with a Cybook or a Sony Reader, at least you'll get full functionality.
