I’ll say it up front, and no surprise to people who might know my tastes, that this is not my kind of thing at all. However, I was riveted through the first three books. The invention! The upending of expectations! But then.... the fourth book and my realization that only the secondary characters made the cut. Compounded by the colossal tedium. It had been possible, in earlier books, to go from Winterfell to King’s Landing without experiencing every. single. step. But momentum and the carrot of Tyrion got me to read book five and after that, it didn’t matter when book six came out. I was done. Five was ridiculous; it was blindingly obvious that Martin had no plan, which was why he continued to open up the story as discontinuities abounded. Never did I finish a book with a greater sense of , “Good riddance.”

Very good summary, consistent with my experience as well. The only difference was I couldn't make it through book 5. I pulled the rip cord about 1/3-1/2 way through.

I wonder how much the book series has suffered by its success and the mainstreaming of fandom?

If George were writing these books in the '80's let's say, when fan interaction and mainstream attention were much more limited, I'd bet the books would have turned out much differently. And I'll also bet that the series would be complete much sooner.

There's been a new Dunk and Egg novella "on the way" for a long time. But not much word since the deadline for the 4th novella to be included in the Dangerous Women anthology came and went back in 2012/13.

I read and enjoyed all 5 books and will most certainly read any more that he finishes. All were genius works and any continuation even if incomplete will help me forget the bad taste left from the pathetic final 2 series in the tv series. How that could be so good for many series and then end up as a kiddie zombie movie I will never know but the author will never let it end like that!

Agree 100%

Also read his vampire book Fevre Dream, and if I remember correctly it wasn't bad, but then again have read any other vampire books.

Meh, don't care at all if he finishes it. I stopped enjoying the books after the second one. I get the feeling he started to hate his creation and just didn't have the energy to wrap it up.
