Using Calibre with a VPN

I use Calibre to read news. I recently installed a VPN product, MullVAD. In Calibare, when I "Fetch News" and then select a newspaper and select "Download Now", I receive an error message: "No Internet Connection". I tried excluding several Calibre programs from the VPN via the VPN's split tunneling, such as calibre.exe and calibre-parallel.exe, but it makes no difference. I tried a second VPN product, Proton VPN, but I had the same experience. The only way I can use Calibre is to turn off the VPN protection, start the download, and then turn it back on. Surprisingly, I can turn the VPN protection back on before the download completes, and it is fine.

I am running Windows 10.

Does anyone know what I need to do to enable Calibre to run with my VPN on?

Thanks

You could disable the check.

i.e.

Preferences/Tweaks
skip_network_check = True

Based on a quick test, that works! Thanks! I'll post if I have trouble going forward.

Check if your VPN has an option for split tunneling and make sure it's configured correctly. Split tunneling allows you to specify which applications use the VPN connection and which do not. Ensure that Calibre is allowed through the VPN. Some VPNs have settings that may interfere with certain applications. Look for any settings related to network or application filtering and try adjusting them. Ensure that your firewall and antivirus software are not blocking Calibre or its components. Add exceptions for Calibre and its related processes in your firewall and antivirus settings. VPNs often change your DNS settings. Check if the DNS settings are configured correctly and that they allow Calibre to connect to the internet. You might want to use a public DNS server like Google's (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) to see if it makes a difference.

Keep in mind that these steps are a general guide, and the specific steps may vary depending on your VPN provider, operating system, and security software. Also try other options, for example buy proxies would be a great idea if you need access from different locations. If you are unsure about any changes, it is recommended that you consult your VPN provider's support documentation or contact customer support.
