FXL & page-progression-direction

Hello,

I have a Fixed Layout ePub3, it's in hebrew so I've added:

Code:

page-progression-direction="rtl"

to the spine element in content.opf.

The file is validated using ePubCheck, however, when I try to view it on GitdenReader pages go from left to right instead of right to left.

Does your HTML have markup to indicate the direction? If not, try changing the html tag to <html dir="rtl">.

Better yet, use the direction CSS property.

While Gitden Reader is pretty good at rendering epub3 files it's not 100% epub3 compliant. But then again no other epub3 app is.

Did you test your book with Readium? If it works with Readium it's simply a Gitden bug. If it doesn't work with Readium there might be another setting that you're missing.

AFAIK, the only other free iOS/Android epub3 reading app with RTL support is Menestrello, which supports RTL if you embed a Hebrew font. (Just ignore the no audio book warning.) It couldn't hurt to test your book with this app, too.

Did you test your book with Readium? If it works with Readium it's simply a Gitden bug. If it doesn't work with Readium there might be another setting that you're missing.

Ah! I didn't know Readium does Fixed Layout, I've just tried it and it looks horrible there :P

Anyway, it seemed to be a Gitden bug, not accepting page-progression-direction="rtl". I've tried Menstrello before, was horrible.

Unfortunately, very few ePub reading apps currently support RTL text, which makes life difficult for readers of languages like Arabic and Hebrew. ADE doesn't support it, for example.

Readium does display Fixed Layout books, after all it's the official IDPF epub3 rendering engine. (Obviously, it doesn't support FXL extensions introduced by Apple and other software manufacturers.)

BTW, if you've checked your book with epubcheck 3.0.1, you may want to also check it with the epubcheck 4 alpha version, which has been optimized for epub3 books.

ADE 4 supports RTL in epub3 ebooks.

None that I know of. But it stands to reason that the next generation of RMSDK based reading apps will support RTL in epub3 ebooks.

However, since the majority of commercially available epubs are epub2 ebooks, it might take a while for epub3 to catch on.

AFAIK, the only eInk reader that supports RTL out of the box is the Kindle (K3 or higher with the latest firmware).

I may be wrong, but I think the Kobo supports it with "kepub" books.

IIRC, Kobo kepubs have limited RTL support. The do support RTL but no context-sensitive character shaping. I.e., they support Hebrew but not Arabic. Also Kobo readers use the ACCESS engine for kepubs.

Thanks for the additional information. Yes, I was aware that Kobo doesn't use ADE for Kepub. Although the Kindle supports Arabic for KF8-format books, it too has some issues relating to embedded fonts, I believe?
