The first numbers are out.

Apple just reported that it sold more than 5 million iPhones over the iPhone 5's opening weekend.
This is a very disappointing number.

Apple sold the iPhone 5 in 9 countries over its opening weekend. It sold the iPhone 4S in 7. It actually sold fewer iPhones per country this year than the last. That's not just deceleration, that's shrinkage.

So here is major media take, not business insider which is a tabloid.

“It’s just a reminder of how far ahead Apple is of pretty much everyone else here,” Mr. Dawson said. He added that Samsung is the one company that sells smartphones in similar quantities, but across many different models of phones. Also, the iPhone is the only smartphone that sells out so quickly.

The strong early sales of the new iPhone also suggest that, despite widespread criticism of the new maps software included with the phone, enthusiasm for Apple’s phone has not waned.

How much do these people get paid?

He used simple sampling technique. Not too bad.
One question would be did he take the total for those stores, relate it to the grand total sold last year last year, and then factor in the increase of stores in the last year.
Just assuming from what is said above that he didn't count the increase of stores overall, he should have gotten a higher number than 8 Mil.

Yes, there are Android phones on the market that equal or surpass the iPhone 5 on paper. Many have larger screens. Some have better battery life and comparable features. But the iPhone 5 wins on fit and finish, and on details that you can’t intuit from a spec sheet.

there’s an upside to continually refining a great product, year after year: It keeps getting better. It would be silly to say that the iPhone 5 is the perfect smartphone—there’s always room for improvement. But it’s closer to perfection than any smartphone has ever been.

for a large, large number of people, iOS 6 Maps has been a huge improvement over Google Maps. I'm talking about those of us who live in China (you know, the place with 1.3+ billion people and the second-largest economy in the world).
