Very odd - the paper this am (Indy, UK.) said something about the success, or strengthy, of Sony's Pottermore site !

From reading the actual blog post it seems the potential issue is not with the texts, it's with making sure the Pottermore website can handle the traffic.

They're going to have tens of millions of people trying to buy and download ebooks the instant they're available. This means they will need ridiculous levels of security, bandwidth, CC processing and data delivery. This is not like putting a web server in your Mom's basement, y'know.

So yes, I say it is much, MUCH better that they get it right than get it out the door. Nor is it like the paper versions are out of print or are utterly unavailable.

I would argue that it is ethically and morally correct but then I tend to feel that paying for crappy service is a bad idea. The regular leaks that the books were going to be released then they wouldn't be. Then they will be but on her terms on October. Now they will be on her terms sometime in 2012.

If her team was so out of it to not realize how many people were going to want to access Pottermore that it cannot handle the number of Beta testers then they should be fired for plain incompotence (sp). All you have to do is look at the ticket sales, game sales, and book sales to know that the number of folks wanting to participate was going to be insanely high and prepare for that. They could control the number of beta testers and have still managed to screw it up.

I am sorry, but this type of gross incompentence pisses me off. Open the store on a different server and let people buy the books or sell them through regular channels but stop jerking people around.
Have you ever made a website? It isn't always easy, especially one as interactive as Pottermore, and with that scale of traffic. There are two million testers, so that is a ton of traffic. Something on this scale requires multiple servers, and getting multiple servers to work together, seemlessly, as one is not an easy job. That requires large scale testing, which is exactly what they're doing now.

Yeah, Pottermore is 100% free. No subscriptions or anything. Only thing on pottermore that will cost money is items in the store.

What are you on about?

The goal is to make sure people pay for good service, rather than spend hours trying to log onto Pottermore and it taking 3 days to buy the ebooks.

"Incompetence"

They are very well aware of the volumes they're dealing with, it just takes a LOT of work to put together a robust system that can handle this kind of traffic and the number of expected transactions. Even Amazon and Apple would buckle under the strain, and they've had years and multiple big sales events to hone their skills.

And please, let's have a little perspective. They're books, not vital medications whose absence will result in the deaths of millions. And the books are available in paper form; you'll live if it takes an extra couple of months to buy the digital versions.

And perhaps this is a good argument against trying to go off on your own and ignore the existing retailers. Amazon, B&N & co already know how to run eBook retail websites.

Pottermore is WAY more than just a place to sell ebooks. That is a MINOR facet of Pottermore.

And they could have done all the rest, and sold the books elsewhere.
And they would actually be available to buy.

Hasn't bothered JKR to not have ebooks so far, so not in a rush. Rather do things right and on her terms. If it takes longer, so be it.

And if you are really that desperate there has been countless digital versions of all the HP books floating around the Internet for years, I read them all, bar the last, on my old HP iPaq years ago.

There are also some more 'adult' versions too, if you know where to look!

I test computer systems for a living and good solid testing always takes far longer than anyone appreciates. Better to be late than a fiasco when launched

We already know JKR is extremely protective of the Potter experience (like Disney was) so she won't sign off on anything that isn't the next best thing to perfect. Also, she's not releasing the books on her own just to rake in a few extra bucks but to use them as draws to the larger Pottermore experience.
Either the system is up to the chalenge or it'll stay in beta, whether Sony or their fans like it or not. And if the PHILOSOPHER'S STONE ebook voucher is the only reason to buy a T1, Sony has bigger problems than partnering with a perfectonist.

Hear we go again.... bloody Rowling stabbing her devotees, who she secretly despises, in the back again, I don't know......

The problems are, almost sadly, not the result of the author and a computer/marketing coven gathering in a dark room and plotting how they can mess you up by spitefully tossing your toys out of your pram, unbelievable as that may sound.
It seems a result of trying to get a very complicated digital enterprise running smoothly - and we all know how brilliantly easy it is to get any sort of a digital anything operating with 100% success first time, don't we.....

Everyone really knew they should have got you in at the start, so it could be done right, but, hey, you experts are so hard to track down just when you're needed.

However...

"I am reaching an irrational level of anger and starting to question why I should bother to buy the books.I would argue that it is ethically and morally correct but then I tend to feel that paying for crappy service is a bad idea. "
I'm sorry, but I don't quite get what you getting irrationally angry, has to do with anything being ethically and morally correct - you're on a different philosophical planet there, I'm afraid....

However, I am sure the wicked, scheming lady has been shaken by your theat not to buy the books.
Still, won't be a disaster though, will it, 'cos people - apart from your good self, of course - will buy the books anyway.

Still, you'll have shown her what's what, eh ?
