Fixing Battery Drain Issue

Hello everybody,

this is my first post in a forum, so be patient with me, but I wanted to share my experience while fixing a battery drain issue with the help of other posts out of this forum.

Hardware:
PRS-T1, not-rooted, firmware 1.0.05

What was the problem ?
After working fine for more than 2 years, battery performance went down significantly and ended up in a battery drain overnight, i.e. fully charged in the evening and empty in the morning.
Another problem was - please keep in mind - that the reader didnot shutdown properly anymore.

Solution 1:
Well, it is known that battery lifetime is limited, so
  1. I ordered a new battery here: http://www.replacedirect.de/category...prrel=4635808#
  2. Opened the reader, soledered a bit and exchanged the battery (http://allesebook.de/e-book-reader/s...-innere-17905/)
  3. Charged the new battery
  4. Was happy ...until the next day, when the reader again was dead.

Solution 2
So obviously I didnot have a hardware, but a software problem. Therefore I
  1. Downloaded the latest firmware version from Sony's homepage
  2. Connected the reader via USB to the PC
  3. Startet the firmware update
  4. ...and ended up in an endless loop with the "opening book" screen,
i.e. I bricked the device (remember the thing with shutdown not possible anymore?)
  5. With the help of a SD card and paragraph 3.13 at https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/PRST...ing_and_Tweaks I got the reader back to life and back to my battery issue

Solution 3 (final and recommended)
As described e.g. here https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...ht=RhialtoFalu my battery drain problem seems to origin from a malfunctioning and continuously running process. With my not-rooted PRS-T1 and my own limited knowledge of Android I chose the following path:
  1. Most important first step was, to repeat the recover proceedure with the SD card (see solution 2) for two reasons:
    • The reader was out of the infinite reboot loop
    • The reader could be shut down properly shortly after the recovering proceedure
  2. With 7z I extracted the file "Updater.package" out of the firmware-EXE-file in my proper version from here https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/PRST1_Firmware_Upgrade
  3. Then copied this file to the "reader" file system as described here in detail https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/PRST1_Firmware_Upgrade
  4. Then I shut down manually the reader and restarted it (this is the crucial difference to the "automatic" firmware-upgrade-EXE, where shutdown didnot work!!)
  5. ...and well, everything is fine ever since (about one week)

Resumee
If you are not familiar with deep insight of Android like me and experiance one of these issues
  • sudden battery drain over night
  • the reader is caught in an infinite reboot loop ("opening book" screen
I recommend the following steps:
  1. Perform a SD recovery and check wether shutdown works properly
  2. Download your proper firmware version (another version also might work)
  3. Extract the "Updater.package"-file and copy it to your reader's "READER" partition
  4. Then shut down your reader manually
  5. and perform the restart proceedure like here https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/PRST1_Firmware_Upgrade
