Thanks for the recommendation. I'm not usually much into comic/graphic novels, but since it's free, I'll give it a try!

I was excited there for a minute when I saw the Kevin Crossley-Holland Viking Myth kindle book listed for UK, thinking they might have it in the US kindle store again, but no luck. They pulled it years ago for some reason, haven't seen it since. I have a print copy, but the ebook would be nice.

The Price movie had a script actually written by Matheson. From memory, it is the closest match to the original novel. Mostly I remember being disappointed that the vampires didn't look better. Matheson was disappointed and had his name removed. But it's not a bad movie, overall.

It's in the public domain and you can freely watch it on YouTube and elsewhere:

In the early nineties, Steve Niles adapted the book as a comic. It was reprinted a few times, but doesn't seem to be available digitally. A shame.

Thanks for the link. A very good review. I still want to try the book, but the reviewer mentions some concerns I had when I first read the synopsis, like: whether the "send teens to space" plan isn't a spectacularly awful idea

Hmmm... You might find quite a few parents of teens that would think sending them to space is a pretty good idea.

Coincidentally, I’m reading The Arm of the Sphinx and it has this quote at the beginning of the chapter I’m on:
Quote:
Compared to how ably Adam and Voleta adapted to our new life, my own acclimation was painfully slow. If mankind ever attempts to colonize the islands of the stars, we should crew the ships with children and put the youngest at the wheel.

The Bright and Breaking Sea by Chloe Neill is $1.99 on Amazon.com
First in a series.
Quote:
Kit Brightling, rescued as a foundling and raised in a home for talented girls, has worked hard to rise through the ranks of the Isles’ Crown Command and become one of the few female captains in Queen Charlotte's fleet. Her ship is small, but she's fast—in part because of Kit’s magical affinity to the sea. But the waters become perilous when the queen sends Kit on a special mission with a partner she never asked for.

Rian Grant, Viscount Queenscliffe, may be a veteran of the Continental war, but Kit doesn’t know him or his motives—and she’s dealt with one too many members of the Beau Monde. But Kit has her orders, and the queen has commanded they journey to a dangerous pirate quay and rescue a spy who's been gathering intelligence on the exiled emperor of Gallia.

Kit can lead her ship and clever crew on her own, but with the fate of queen and country at stake, Kit and Rian must learn to trust each other, or else the Isles will fall....
