This looks very interesting. E.O. Wilson's latest - The Social Conquest of Earth

Quote:
From the most celebrated heir to Darwin comes a groundbreaking book on evolution, the summa work of Edward O. Wilson's legendary career.

Where did we come from? What are we? Where are we going? In a generational work of clarity and passion, one of our greatest living scientists directly addresses these three fundamental questions of religion, philosophy, and science while “overturning the famous theory that evolution naturally encourages creatures to put family first” (Discover magazine). Refashioning the story of human evolution in a work that is certain to generate headlines, Wilson draws on his remarkable knowledge of biology and social behavior to show that group selection, not kin selection, is the primary driving force of human evolution. He proves that history makes no sense without prehistory, and prehistory makes no sense without biology. Demonstrating that the sources of morality, religion, and the creative arts are fundamentally biological in nature, Wilson presents us with the clearest explanation ever produced as to the origin of the human condition and why it resulted in our domination of the Earth’s biosphere. 90 illustrations

Thanks Kennyc. I've always found evolution to be a fascinating subject. I was mesmerized by Richard Dawkins The Greatest Show on Earth and this looks equally interesting.

I just finished Longitude by Dava Sobel in one sitting. Part history and part biography it was certainly one of the most accessible science books I've ever read. Today our car or phone tells us where to go via GPS, but a few centuries ago navigating was a nightmare because there was no way of determining longitude at sea.

I love the writing of E.O. Wilson and got this a few months ago with a kobobooks discount. It's up on my TBR list, but haven't read it yet.

Many years ago, I picked up a used, unabridged copy of his Sociobiology: The New Synthesis in very good condition. This is a huge, beautiful book with many lavish illustrations and was a true joy to read.

Great stuff for kids!

Quote:
Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K–12: 2013 (Books published in 2012)
OSTB award sealOur vision of what we call science has broadened. The practices we use to explore the natural world and to create new products now include mathematics and engineering. We also recognize the importance of the arts, history, and human perspectives in these explorations. Science is not just one “way of knowing,” but many. The same is true for our vision of outstanding science literature. Today’s best science trade books include captivating stories of human achievement—like those of Rachel Carson or the diverse investigators in What Color Is My World? They combine science and engineering, like the story of the Mighty Mars Rovers. They feature outstanding art, lyric poetry, and plenty of ideas for hands-on activity. These great books have something to grab the minds and hearts of diverse learners. So once again, we present a list of the year’s Outstanding Science Trade Books with pride and optimism. They have the potential to enrich and inspire, as they convey the best science content. .

I've recently enjoyed reading The Joy of X: A Guided Tour of Mathematics, from One to Infinity, by Steven Strogatz.

Amazon UK description:

Quote:
Maths is everywhere, often where we least expect it. Award-winning professor Steven Strogatz acts as our guide as he takes us on a tour of numbers that - unbeknownst to the most of us - form a fascinating and integral part of our everyday lives. In The Joy of X, Strogatz explains the great ideas of maths - from negative numbers to calculus, fat tails to infinity - and shows how they connect to everything from popular culture and philosophy to current affairs and business practice. He is the maths teacher you never had and this book is perfect for the smart and curious, the expert and the beginner.
I can't say that I learnt anything from it, but it was a fun read, and well worth the current £1.49 sale price.

No such sale price here in the Colonies, unfortunately. It's $9.45 at the U.S. Amazon's Kindle Store.

Yes, it's part of this month's "100 Kindle books for £2.99 or less" sale that Amazon UK run every month. I believe Amazon US do a similar thing, but the books are different.
