Cool Writing Harry Dresden: An Interview With Jim Butcher

Posted on June 18, 2018 by Shiri Sondheimer in theroarbots.com

Writing Harry Dresden: An Interview With Jim Butcher

Storm Front, the first Dresden Files novel, was published in April of 2000 and author Jim Butcher has taken the titular character, Harry Dresden, on a wild ride in the eighteen years, fifteen novels, two short story collections, seven graphic novels, and RPG since (with a sixteenth novel and an eighth graphic novel forthcoming).

In the series’ the most recent installment, Brief Cases: More Stories From the Dresden Files, Butcher uses the opportunities provided by a short story collection not only to fill readers in on more of what Harry gets up to between books (helping the son of Bigfoot out, taking his kid to the zoo, exorcising demons from lovely suburban homes) but also to show us Dresden’s Chicago through different sets of eyes, including those of Baron of Chicago John Marcone; former apprentice, and now Winter Lady, Molly Carpenter; Harry’s daughter, Maggie; and their his trusty, steed-sized canine, Mouse. And of course, there’s the time now-distinguished Warden Anastasia Luccio teamed up with Wyatt Earp to punt some zombies out of town…

Currently, Butcher’s putting the finishing touches on Peace Talks, the sixteenth book in the series. Peace Talks is slated for an early 2019 release.
That is something new, the release date. My guess would be maybe March? Gives it a half year for the publisher to do their doing.

Any tentative dates on peace talks yet? I am considering rereading the series but don't want to catch up and then still have to wait again another year. Last I heard he was planning to submit the final draft in Sept

Nothing newer than the post right above yours quoting an article from late last month saying "early 2019 release."

Cool Read Dana Stabenow’s Goodreads review of Changes

Dana Stabenow author of the Kate Shugak series, reviews Jim Butcher's Changes

I honestly didn't think Butcher could write a better Harry Dresden book than Dead Beat. Boy, was I wrong.

*****

Big. Fat. Spoiler. Alert. Don't read any more until you've read the book.

*****

Spoiler:
If I may speak of this from a personal perspective, I have done the same thing with the Kate Shugak series that Jim Butcher has now done in Changes. I took her job away, albeit off stage, I killed her lover, I burned down her house. But in Changes Butcher does it all in one book, in 438 pages he strips Harry to the bone, divesting him of every possession, including his soul. And then on the last page he kills him.

Except the oncoming train tells me he hasn't. And also because I went hotfoot to his website to be reassured that Butcher is still saying there are twenty books in the series and this is only number 12.

My heart failed me too many times to mention, in steadily increasing palpitations. When Harry's office exploded, not so much, he hadn't been there in a while. When the Blue Beetle got squished beyond all hope of resurrection. When his house burned down and took his lab with it. When he broke his back. When he slaughtered the Winter Knight, I actually cried out "No, Harry, no!" What will Mab do to him? It's all very well for Ebenezer (Harry's grandfather! It all makes so much more sense now! Jesus, how far ahead does Butcher plot out these novels?) to say that Harry will always be able to choose, but Harry sold himself to Mab in exchange for healing and power, and he killed, deliberately, to get them. That's a bill I'm not sure he can pay.

When Butters got shot.

And then Harry kills Susan, the one woman he has ever loved, to save their daughter and put an end to the Red Court.

He gives Harry a daughter, and then he takes her away.

And then that horrible, wonderful bait-and-switch with Karrin at the end.

Wow.

There are so many great, great scenes, but let me just single out a few.

The Grey Council arriving in the nick of time, when we finally get to see Blackstaff at work. "I got another one."

Karrin with Fidelacchius.

The great rif on the Fellowship of the Ring. (I will say I knew Martin was the rift within the lute, he was too impervious to injury. But I didn't see coming what the soul gaze he exchanges with Harry at the end reveals. But of course it fits, perfectly.)

The best part of this book is that Butcher waited this long to write it, to give us 11 previous chapters in Harry's life, giving us that much lead time to become completely invested in his character. We feel every hit Harry takes like it's aimed at us personally.

Incredibly well done, and leaving the reader wondering how the hell Harry's going to come back from this, and if he'll still be our Harry when he does. What a great place to leave us. Bravo!!

It all makes so much more sense now! Jesus, how far ahead does Butcher plot out these novels?
Well, those two sentences are the only things spoiler free. To answer, apparently all the way from start to finish. Not every last detail, no, but all the important pieces. Every location, every major event. All he has to do is fill in the fluff in between, figure out how to get from point A to B to C, and who to take along for the ride. Easy. Well, not so easy.

In Dresden’s world, the possibilities are endless, the mythology boundless, and the snark bottomless.

I had the opportunity to talk to Butcher about writing an epic series, playing in the world’s larger sandbox, the joy to be found in writing a good villain, and what’s next for Harry. Check it out:

Cool The Dresden Files Fantasy Novels Optioned By Fox21 TV Studios For Series Development

In a competitive situation, Fox21 Television Studios has optioned the rights to The Dresden Files, the long-running New York Times bestselling series of contemporary fantasy novels written by Jim Butcher for series development.

The books follow private investigator and wizard Harry Dresden, as he recounts investigations into supernatural disturbances in modern-day Chicago. In the world of The Dresden Files, magic is real, along with vampires, demons, spirits, faeries, werewolves, outsiders, and other monsters. Harry Dresden works as the world’s only “consulting wizard”, accepting supernatural cases from both human and nonhuman clients, as well as the Chicago PD’s Special Investigation unit. As the series progresses, Dresden takes on an increasingly important role in the supernatural world at large, as he works to protect the general public, making getting by as a working wizard and private investigator difficult for him. He finds himself facing off against an increasing variety of creatures (including other wizards), while facing the realization that his various cases may all be tied together behind the scenes and that his role might be even greater than he is willing to admit.

Ileen Maisel, who is under a first-look deal with Fox 21, is producing the project with Temple Hill Entertainment. John Fischer and Julie Waters are overseeing the project for Temple Hill.

The first novel in the franchise, Storm Front, was published in 2000 by Roc Books. The most recent 15th book in the series, Skin Game, was published in 2014. The franchise has sold millions of copies and is published in 29 countries worldwide.

The Dresden Files was previously adapted for television in a short-lived series on then Sci-Fi Channel starring Paul Blackthorne as the eponymous wizard. The 12-episode series ran for one season in 2007.

Butcher is repped by APA and Jennifer Jackson.
