So the demo units allow you to play with the web browser? (This would be in contrast to the Kindle demo units which have the web browser locked out for some reason.)

Because they don't want some comedian surfing to a porn website and leaving the demo unit lying there to shock and offend another customer.

Right. Fairly simple to have it time out after x seconds inactivity and automatically clear the http cache and relaunch the demo loop. But the lawyers probably weren't sufficiently pleased with that solution.

Yes, you could browse the internet live. And we "bought" an ebook on the device too, downloaded and viewed it, which was a nice feature to be able to try out.

The BN store I went to in Southern NH was set up almost like an Apple Store, with several tables with devices laid out on them. another BN store I went to only had one each of the Nook and Nook Color.

*** update: I just read Nyrath's comment and am curious if BN has been able to set up some strict filtering...

I think using the Kindle experimental (torture) Web browser to surf for porn would be the most effective cure for porn addiction out there. The same would go for texting/Twitter addiction, particularly if you had to turn the symbol key on and off every time you wanted to type a number.

That said, I've been seriously underwhelmed by the Nook Color browser. The lack of pinch to zoom makes clicking small links (like thread page numbers here) a pain, and it took me 10 minutes just to get the sign-in page on BN.com to bring up a keyboard to log in. Plus many of the BN pages that need flash, like lovely Kate's videos, just have blank screen space. I find that I prefer web surfing on my little ipod touch, which is easy to pinch zoom, and pages load much faster than on the NC. Plus, the ipod touch has its convenient mail app, so I can check different types of email in one place, whereas on the Nook I have to go (slowly) to yahoo and gmail mobile sites. The other major disappointment in basic reading experience is the finicky page turns--I often have to tap several times on the Nook, whereas on the itouch it's never a problem.

I really wanted to love the NC, but I'm just finding I'm willing to settle for the smaller screen on the itouch for the portability, lightness, variety of reading platforms/free book sources (plus easy library ebook access now through the Bluefire app), better video options with Netflix and easy Handbrake DVD conversion, the ultra-sharp Retina display, and overall greater ease of use. Then for a larger-screen e-ink experience I like my Sony Touch Edition, also light and portable and easy to use.

A few pages back some were discussing could it trickle charge or not with a standard usb cable, even though official word is proprietary only. So can it? and if so, how slow?

Does any other cable work from other devices?

Yes. It slow charges from a standard cable plugged into a computer. It fast charges on the provided charger/cable. I used the charger once, when I first got the device, and haven't used it since. If it needs charging, I just plug it into whatever computer is nearby.

I think it's basically official, all the major and minor reviews are in and it seems to be a hit and very welled received

the only bad reviews I read were on total gadget type of blogs and website who wanted it being more tablet than ereader and were disappointed.

After about 2.5 weeks with this, I'm loving it more and more.

That's what I love about the tech world. Come out with any new device in the tech arena and you're guaranteed to get some variation on the following responses:

It sucks, because it's not made by XYZ company.
It sucks, because it IS made by XYZ company.
It sucks, because it's an X and I want a Y.
It sucks, because it's an X, which is exactly what I want, but I can't afford it.
It sucks, because now everyone will have one and I won't be so geeky-cool anymore.
It sucks, because I'm so irredeemably 133t that I can't say anything good about anything without losing my 'net cred.

i just got my nookcolor as a early xmas gift, I read about the LCD screen but since this is my first ereader, I am used to reading a lot on PC or my iphone which I also just got a few months back. I love the NC so far, the graphics are great, and it's nice reading on a bigger screen than my iphone 4.

I did not want to spend the money to buy the iPad with 3G, wifi which is the one I wanted, plus I think the NC is a little more portable it seems. It was little more expensive than the Kindle with 3G, wifi, but I'm not a big amazon fan, and I love B&N. Plus I like that I can take it to the store if need be.

I'm not a techie, so the PDF, etc I haven't a clue, I'll be lucky to figure out the music and video parts!

The only thing I'm disappointed in is that 3G wasn't offered, hopefully this will be in a upgrade?

¿Any idea on how well sales are going? Is it outselling the original Nook yet?

Usually the companies keep quiet about ereader sales, but now that the NookColor has enough supply to meet the demand, it should surpass Nook sales. You can see why in stores--people crowding around the NookColor display, BN currently discounting Nook covers by 30% but not NookColor ones, BestBuy promoting value bundles just for the Nook. The addition of Walmart and Best Buy to show off the NookColor will just add to sales, as people see a better alternative to all the cheapo Android tablets. Then when they upgrade the browser to play Flash next year and add more apps, it will appeal even more to those that want more tablet features.

I agree with the Suntimes review above, that the best choices for ereaders now are the Kindle3, the NookColor, and the ipad, with your choice depending on trade-offs for weight, cost, battery life, type of screen, and desire for extra apps. I've owned all three, and decided the NookColor had the best mix of all those features and compromises for my needs. I was going to wait for a rumored 7" ipad, but Steve Jobs quashed those hopes, and if the next ipad just has cameras and is just a little lighter, then I won't feel any regret for sticking with the NookColor.
