Sony eReader Bookstore Expansion

Bloomberg is reporting:

Quote:
The company, the maker of Bravia televisions and Walkman music players, today also said it will launch an online store for its Sony Reader, a digital book reader, in the U.K. in October with over 100,000 titles to challenge Kindle maker Amazon.com Inc. The store will open in Germany and Austria later this year and in France, Italy, Spain next year.
Source: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-0...479-euros.html

This is the first indication that Sony plans to seriously invest in its ebook business. Releasing a new eink device is one thing; broadening its local content is quite another.

This cannot be good news in the Kobo corporate offices.

I think the list is meant to address new markets in addition to US and Canada and Japan. With the new T1 offering Wifi, I was wondering if Sony was going to have partnerships with certain bookstores somehow. It appears the answer is to expand their bookstore. I see this move as great news. I see many complaints about the Sony bookstore, but I find 99% of what I want there. Since agency pricing, it is cost-competitive too. They also have been offering coupons more frequently.

This is good. I've not seen a lot of the books I want at Sony but if they expand...that almost doubles my chances of buying a new Reader.

If the DRM is easy to crack I'll buy from them, too. If not - I heart Kobo.

Sony uses the same Adept DRM that Kobo uses. So it's very easy to remove. If you can already remove the DRM from Kobo bought eBooks, then you can remove the DRM from Sony bought eBooks.

But don't they use different tools/plugins (than Kobos)?

And will it(drm) be updated when the new reader is released?

The DRM will be the same as it is now. It won't be changing. The only difference is that to buy from Sony on your computer you'll need Reader Library and once downloaded, it's just a box standard ePub. Same as if you downloaded from Kobo. The tools used to strip the DRM from Kobo purchases or BooksOnBoard purchases is exactly the same.

If you use Calibre to manage your devices, then the plugins for stripping will be the same as well.

Just out of interest, anyone know how long Sony bookstore has been up and running in the US and Canada ?
To give us an idea of how seriously they took that geographical area of their e-business..............
