ChatGPT and citations
Ran into an item on using ChatGPT for creating citations. Evidently, it still hallucinates.

It's not "hallucinating", that's a marketing spin term. It's an inevitable result of how it works.
Without a massive change in how data is fed to these, with costly human curation, it's never going to sensibly cite (or in anyway identify sources). The builders / purveyors of these LLM don't even want to expose the sources. The whole concept is broken. |

Sadly, I did a test checking ChatGPT results vs. Google search. Google won by a country mile. Google did give fewer results but it also gave me the information that no search results were found. where ChatGPT got inventive. OTOH, ChatGPT's results were often good for a chuckle though that is an indication that the output was unrelated to reality.

Meanwhile RTE news this morning had an item about Datacentres heading to equal all industrial electricity use in Ireland, that they were connecting to gas grid to generate their own electricity. The growth fuelled by "AI" building/use. So massive increase in carbon emissions.
Ultimately the LLM are research toys like 1960s Eliza, but being hyped as productivity tools. They will not be cheap. The first cut is free to get you hooked. See also Copilot which is ultimately Clippy / Clippit 2.0. |

LLMs are essentially probability machines and not smarter than your keyboard prediction.
