For those saying "I know that name from somewhere," this is the series created as a tie-in to the Castle TV show. The show's done, but the fiction lives on...

Spoiler:
Quote:
A family has been found murdered in the heart of 1920s Shanghai. But what could have compelled them to open the door to their killer?
Inspector Danilov has always taken a unique approach to solving his cases. So, when he's asked to investigate the violent death of a fellow police officer, killed in action, he doesn't think twice about turning his attention to a different case altogether: the brutal murder of the Lee family, found massacred in their own home.

How could the deaths of an ordinary family account for a shooting halfway across the city? And what clues lie with the letter found clasped in the dead girl's hand? Inspector Danilov's instincts tell him he's close. But when the investigation reveals deep corruption at Shanghai's core, Danilov faces a choice: probe further, and expose the evil underbelly of the city? Or shy from duty and keep the few people he loves safe?

Don't miss the second book in MJ Lee's brilliant Inspector Danilov series.

A Burnable Book is the first in the short (for now, at least) two-book John Gower series by Bruce Holsinger. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Burnable-Book...dp/B00DB36D9K/

Spoiler:
Quote:
In Chaucer's London, betrayal, murder, royal intrigue, mystery, and dangerous politics swirl around the existence of a prophetic book that foretells the deaths of England's kings. Bruce Holsinger's A Burnable Book is an irresistible historical thriller reminiscent of the classics An Instance of the Fingerpost, The Name of the Rose, and The Crimson Petal and the White.

London, 1385. Surrounded by ruthless courtiers--including his powerful uncle, John of Gaunt, and Gaunt's artful mistress, Katherine Swynford--England's young, still untested king, Richard II, is in mortal peril, and the danger is only beginning. Songs are heard across London--catchy verses said to originate from an ancient book that prophesies the end of England's kings--and among the book's predictions is Richard's assassination. Only a few powerful men know that the cryptic lines derive from a "burnable book," a seditious work that threatens the stability of the realm. To find the manuscript, wily bureaucrat Geoffrey Chaucer turns to fellow poet John Gower, a professional trader in information with connections high and low. Gower discovers that the book and incriminating evidence about its author have fallen into the unwitting hands of innocents, who will be drawn into a labyrinthine conspiracy that reaches from the king's court to London's slums and stews--and potentially implicates his own son. As the intrigue deepens, it becomes clear that Gower, a man with secrets of his own, may be the last hope to save a king from a terrible fate.

Medieval scholar Bruce Holsinger draws on his vast knowledge of the period to add colorful, authentic detail--on everything from poetry and bookbinding to court intrigues and brothels--to this highly entertaining and brilliantly constructed epic literary mystery that brings medieval England gloriously to life.

Artifacts is the first in the Faye Longchamp series by Mary Anna Evans. It is free right now at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Artifacts-Fay...dp/B003VRZID8/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Faye Longchamp has lost nearly everything except for her quick mind and a grim determination to hang onto her ancestral home, Joyeuse, a moldering plantation hidden along the Florida coast. No one knows how Faye’s great-great-grandmother Cally, a newly freed slave barely out of her teens, came to own Joyeuse in the aftermath of the Civil War. No one knows how her descendants hung onto it through Reconstruction, world wars, the Depression, and Jim Crow, but Faye has inherited the island plantation—and the family tenacity. When the property taxes rise beyond her means, she sets out to save Joyeuse by digging for artifacts on her property and the surrounding National Wildlife Refuge and selling them on the black market. A tiny bit of that dead glory would pay a year’s taxes. A big valuable chunk of the past would save her home forever.

But instead of potsherds and arrowheads, she uncovers a woman’s shattered skull, a Jackie Kennedy-style earring nestled against its bony cheek. Faye is torn. If she reports the forty-year-old murder, she’ll reveal her illegal livelihood, thus risking jail and the loss of Joyeuse. She doesn’t intend to let that happen, so she probes into the dead woman’s history, unaware that the past is rushing up on her like a hurricane across deceptively calm Gulf waters...

The First Rule by Robert Crais is either the 13th in the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series (per SYKM) or the 2nd in the Joe Pike series (per Amazon's blurb) - take your pick . I'm amazed at how many awards this series has won/been a finalist for...take a look yourself at SYKM...

In any case, Rule has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/First-Rule-Jo...dp/B002XW28BW/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-first-rule-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
When Frank Meyer and his family are executed in their home, the police begin investigating the secret life they're sure Meyer had. Joe Pike's on a hunt of his own: to clear his friend's name, and to punish the people who murdered him. What starts out as a simple trail gets twisted fast by old grudges, double crosses, blood vengeance, and a crime so terrible even Pike and his partner Elvis Cole have no way to measure it.

Call for the Dead is the first in the George Smiley series by John le Carré. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Call-Dead-Geo...dp/B0081KYXQ8/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/call-for-the-dead-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
From the New York Times bestselling author of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; The Spy Who Came in from the Cold; and The Night Manager, now a television series starring Tom Hiddleston.

John le Carré’s memoir, The Pigeon Tunnel: Stories from My Life, is now available from Viking.

"Go back to Whitehall and look for more spies on your drawing boards."
George Smiley is no one's idea of a spy—which is perhaps why he's such a natural. But Smiley apparently made a mistake. After a routine security interview, he concluded that the affable Samuel Fennan had nothing to hide. Why, then, did the man from the Foreign Office shoot himself in the head only hours later? Or did he?

The heart-stopping tale of intrigue that launched both novelist and spy, Call for the Dead is an essential introduction to le Carré's chillingly amoral universe.

The Cruelest Month is the third in the Chief Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. The second title in the series, A Fatal Grace (apa Dead Cold in some parts), is still at $2.99 as well - see info below. It would be nice if they march through the series, discounting to $2.99 .

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Cruelest-Mont...dp/B0010SGRMG/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-cruelest-month

Spoiler:
Quote:
"Many mystery buffs have credited Louise Penny with the revival of the type of traditional murder mystery made famous by Agatha Christie. . . . The book's title is a metaphor not only for the month of April but also for Gamache's personal and professional challenges---making this the series standout so far."
--Sarah Weinman

Welcome to Three Pines, where the cruelest month is about to deliver on its threat.

It's spring in the tiny, forgotten village; buds are on the trees and the first flowers are struggling through the newly thawed earth. But not everything is meant to return to life. . .

When some villagers decide to celebrate Easter with a séance at the Old Hadley House, they are hoping to rid the town of its evil---until one of their party dies of fright. Was this a natural death, or was the victim somehow helped along?

Brilliant, compassionate Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec is called to investigate, in a case that will force him to face his own ghosts as well as those of a seemingly idyllic town where relationships are far more dangerous than they seem.

Free on Amazon UK today - Death of a Dancer (Beldon Magna Mysteries Book 3) by Anthony Litton

Spoiler:
The truth is coming to the surface…

Rumours abound in the market town of Estwich when a legendary theatre, The Dolphin, is rediscovered by workmen who are demolishing old warehouses in the area.

The townsfolk thought it had been destroyed over fifty years ago, but it is found intact behind an old wall, heavy panelling and a locked red and gold front door.

Inside the shadows of the theatre, behind the dusty velvet curtains and chipped gilt paint, there is a macabre discovery when the body of a famous dancer, Ariana Kujenikov, is found perfectly preserved in plastic wrapping and suspended above the stage.

The discovery of a man’s body in the theatre leads to a complex investigation for detectives DC Cerian Morgan, DI Calderwood and DS Bulmer.

Tracing back through the history of the wealthy DeLancy family who owned the theatre, the detectives uncover scandal, elopement and hidden rivalries, and the fate of the dancer is finally revealed.

But not before more lives are put in deadly danger.
