Adobe Digital Editions with more languages + network install

A new version of Adobe Digital Editions is available. Version 1.7 expands language support (newly added: Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese (Traditional+Simplified), Korean, Dutch, and Portuguese) and includes the option to download a standalone installer instead of the application itself (useful if you are in a networked environment).

And this version finally supports the so-frequently-requested fully justified text. Doesn't look like it does automatic hyphenation (too much to hope for, I suppose), but unless my eyes deceive me it appears to be doing microtypographic corrections to ensure a flush-looking edge accounting for letter shapes. Nice job!

Their release notes are rather sparse, I'm guessing there were more changes under the hood, though I haven't had a chance to look at it yet.

But you need to specify text-align: justify right ?
If there's no alignment specified, the user should be able to select between "justify" and "left".

That would be optimal (well, for me "optimal" would be a user stylesheet, but I digress). Alas, it does seem to just directly reflect the book CSS with no user-controllable options.

I'll probably switch the stylesheet to text-align: justify and dump our cache on Feedbooks, but we need DE to let the users select this sort of settings themselves.

At this point, we really need a best practices document for both content producers and reading systems, where we would discuss about these issues (covers too).

Well, the standalone installer was already available for 1.5 on this KB entry, but maybe they offer it more publicly now.

Interestingly this was the only way to install DE on my XP machine as the "Flash" installation complained about a corrupted ZIP archive after downloading.

The big change in the standalone installer, is that is an actual installer instead of just the executable. Also the installer puts the application into the "Program Files" (or \Applications on Mac) directory instead of previous path under the user directory.

So does anybody know if Sony will release a firmware update for the 505 or 700 for the new Digital Editions "engine"? Be nice to have full justification on the text on the reader.

Yes. That is, some people at Sony and Adobe know.
