An absolutely amazing book of short stories.

Many of these appeared in Penthouse and Cavalier, back in the early '70s, when he was hungry and barely surviving. These are among his best short stories ever, in my opinion.

I'm stuck between Night Shift or Skeleton Crew (which was almost titled Night Moves. If that happened, I wonder if they would have kept up the Night ___ naming convention?).

But really all his short story and novella collections are worth reading.

Hey, look at this:

It looks like Kobo has it at the same price - https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/night-shift-7. And much to my surprise, in Kobo Oz has it at $3.58AUD, which seems to be the normal price.

And I agree with everyone else, it is an excellent collection. It's been a long time since I read it and I do not remember exactly what is in it, but, I remember how much I enjoyed it at the time.

The Sea Was a Fair Master by Calvin Demmer
Amazon US $0.99

The world’s fate lies with a comatose young girl; an android wants to remember a human she once knew under Martian skies; men at sea learn that the ocean is a realm far different from land, where an unforgiving god rules; a school security guard discovers extreme English class; and a man understands what the behemoth beneath the sea commands of him.
The Sea Was a Fair Master is a collection of 23 stories, riding the currents of fantasy, science fiction, crime, and horror. There are tales of murder, death, loss, revenge, greed, and hate. There are also tales of hope, survival, and love.
For the sea was a fair master.

Great photo.

Read them both, but read Night Shift first.

A repeat, Letters to the Damned by Austin Crawley is .99 at Amazon and Smashwords.

A bereaved husband goes to England for a change of scenery and stays in a small village where people post letters to dead relatives to ask for supernatural favours in an out of use post box. Small town creepiness entwined with some genuine folklore.

Advertising says one week only but didn't give the dates! This is an author I watch because everything he writes is very original and well written.

Gods of the Black Gate by Joseph Sale
Amazon US $0.99

Quote:
“There are those who bow to darkness. And there are others to whom darkness bows.” In 2060 Caleb Rogers and his partner Tom Marvin put away one of the most dangerous serial killers Texas has ever known: Craig Smiley, an ex-infantry mental patient who believes he can summon seven gods through a series of disturbing rituals. Caleb and Tom secured him a life sentence in Mars's toughest prison. They thought the whole thing was finished. But when Smiley escapes the prison seven years later and sets out once again on his insane mission, Caleb and Tom are sent to Mars to track him down. Both cop and criminal are determined to finish what they started. Only the criminal will stop at nothing. Gods of the Black Gate is part thriller, part supernatural horror, part sci-fi blockbuster and at its heart: a journey of spiritual descent.

Radio Tower by Boris Bacic is $0.99 at Amazon US

Quote:
No one ever leaves Woodberry…

Chris Townsend is a software engineer who has trouble dealing with his past. When his company assigns him to a new project situated in a small town in Oregon, he initially refuses the offer, until he realizes that this change may be exactly what he needs to come to terms with his problems.

While the town of Woodberry is perfect at first glance and his neighbors friendly, this quickly changes when Chris starts asking about the radio tower perched on top of the highest hill in the town. He is warned not to talk about the tower and soon becomes increasingly aware that he is closely watched. To make things worse, each time the tower lights start blinking, the townsfolk go into a hypnotic trance and their behavior turns hostile.

Chris’ new life quickly turns into a desperate fight for survival, as he realizes that he’s not the first victim to become trapped in the town.

Interesting. One reviewer states that he/she literally "inhaled" the book. I wonder if there was someone handy to call 911, or if it was too late...

(It does, however, look like a good read.)

That review got my attention too. Silly phrasing aside, I haven't felt that way about a book in a LONG time. Maybe when I read my first Bentley Little book (The Ignored).

Speaking of Bentley Little, for me it was "The Mailman".
