A truck comes to a 1000 ft. long bridge and stops right before going on to it to read a sign. The sign says that the maximum weight the bridge can hold is 4 tons, which is the exact weight of the truck. So the truck starts going on the bridge. About halfway over the bridge a little bird lands on the top of the truck. Does the bridge break?

^If it was built to engineering standards then the bridgewouldn't fail. In my country the posted limit is about 1/10th of what it actually can hold.

My rule was just that the three numbers must be in non-descending order. That is, each number must be as big or bigger than the previous one.

The trick is that the examples I gave followed a stricter rule (ascending powers). Many people in this sort of situation only ask about things that match the stricter rule, getting more confident of the answer with each "yes" they receive. But the only way to tell if you've actually understood the rule is to try some examples that you think should receive a "no".

If the sign and the weights are correct, yes it breaks. And the bridge must be a flat bridge.

I did consider that the truck might be going down the other side of the bridge, in which case its weight would be lessened because it is going down. But in that case it would have already broken the bridge by being effectively slightly heavier than 4 tons on the first upwards part of the bridge.

Of course, in the real world bridge weight limits are no the actual limits. Unless someone's done something terribly wrong.

If the limit is 4 tons and the lorry weighs exactly 4 tons, surely the bridge would break as soon as the lorry drove on it due to the weight of things like rubbish/dirt etc already on the bridge. Or is the bridge kept in a sterile condition?

Doh, I had that, except when I used hexidecimal you gave me a no for 8, c, e instead of yes like I expected. I may have mistyped when I did it though.

The bridge would break because the truck + the driver already exceeds the weight the bridge can support, bird or no bird.

You gave 8, B, E. That's a number and two letters.

Now, if you'd mentioned that they were meant to be interpreted as hexadecimal numbers, I would have given a yes. But just on their own? No.
