One of the most celebrated thrillers ever written, The Day of the Jackal is the electrifying story of the struggle to catch a killer before it's too late.

It is 1963 and an anonymous Englishman has been hired by the Operations Chief of the O.A.S. to murder General de Galle. A failed attempt in the previous year means the target will be nearly impossible to get to. But this latest plot involves a lethal weapon: an assassin of legendary talent.

Known only as The Jackal this remorseless and deadly killer must be stopped, but how do you track a man who exists in name alone?

Quote:
Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree traded her power-broker life for a run-down dream house in peaceful Eastport, Maine. But the do-it-yourself enthusiast is learning that no matter how carefully you build your home, murder has a way of slipping in through the cracks. . . .

It’s a bright June afternoon and old-house-fixer-upper Jake Tiptree is driving through downeast Maine on an unusual errand. She’s getting ready to interview a large, angry man with a criminal history. Jim Diamond may or may not be harassing his ex-wife with life-threatening letters, but Jake promised her new housekeeper, Bella Diamond, she’d look into the matter. An ex-con and a deadbeat, Jim Diamond doesn’t have a history of violence . . . that is, not until Jake arrives at his apartment and discovers that a killer has been there first.

Suddenly Jake and her best friend, Ellie White, find themselves at the center of a murder with too many suspects and too few clues. And as if that’s not enough, Jake is now saddled with the manic Bella, whose certainty that she’ll be the next victim is fueling a supercompulsive neatness—one that threatens to clean Jake and her long-suffering husband, Wade, out of house and home.

Add to that a moose in her kitchen, a rebellious son with a habit of dumping Miss Right for Miss Wrong, and a troublesome ex of her own, and Jake is already at wit’s end. Then she gets word that a horde of her dad’s long-lost relatives mean to descend on Eastport, intending to be put up at her far-from-fixed-up fixer-upper.

When the killer does strike again, it’s not where Jake expects . . . and the victim couldn’t be more of a surprise. For this is a case bigger than the usual angry—ex-spouse variety, and now that Jake and Ellie have gotten themselves involved, they’ve each won a special place in a ruthless murderer’s master plan of greed, deception, and death. And the prize? A pair of eternally private rooms—six feet under!

A Spectacle of Corruption is the 2nd in the short three-book Benjamin Weaver series by David Liss. The first title in this series, A Conspiracy of Paper, which I read and enjoyed a lot in DTB days, won three "best-first novel" awards and was nominated for a fourth. So I'm happy to see this one drop to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FC1B2O
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-s...-of-corruption

Spoiler:
Quote:
Benjamin Weaver, the quick-witted pugilist turned private investigator, returns in David Liss’s sequel to the Edgar Award–winning novel, A Conspiracy of Paper.

“[A] wonderful book . . . every bit as good as [Liss’s] remarkable debut . . . easily one of the year’s best.”—The Boston Globe

Moments after his conviction for a murder he did not commit, at a trial presided over by a judge determined to find him guilty, Benjamin Weaver is accosted by a stranger who cunningly slips a lockpick and a file into his hands. In an instant he understands two things: Someone wants him to hang—and another equally mysterious agent is determined to see him free. After a daring escape from eighteenth-century London’s most notorious prison, Weaver must face another challenge: to prove himself innocent when the corrupt courts have shown they care nothing for justice. Unable to show his face in public, Weaver pursues his inquiry disguised as a wealthy merchant seeking to involve himself in the contentious world of politics. Desperately navigating a labyrinth of schemers, crime lords, assassins, and spies, Weaver learns that in an election year, little is what it seems and the truth comes at a staggeringly high cost.

Elegy for Eddie is the 9th in the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear. IT has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005UD1ECK
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/ele...ie-dobbs-novel

Spoiler:
Quote:
In this latest entry in Jacqueline Winspear’s acclaimed, bestselling mystery series—“less whodunits than why-dunits, more P.D. James than Agatha Christie” (USA Today)—Maisie Dobbs takes on her most personal case yet, a twisting investigation into the brutal killing of a street peddler that will take her from the working-class neighborhoods of her childhood into London’s highest circles of power. Perfect for fans of A Lesson in Secrets, The Mapping of Love and Death, or other Maisie Dobbs mysteries—and an ideal place for new readers to enter the series—Elegy for Eddie is an incomparable work of intrigue and ingenuity, full of intimate descriptions and beautifully painted scenes from between the World Wars, from one of the most highly acclaimed masters of mystery, Jacqueline Winspear.

Thin Air (Keith Calder Book 19) by Gerald Hammond

Few in Scotland can match gunsmith Keith Calder’s knowledge of firearms.

Fewer still have solved as many crimes as Calder, so it is fitting that Gerald Hammond’s unique, most popular amateur sleuth is called upon to solve a particularly vexing murder. Old Murdo, tenant farmer at Easter Coullie Farm, is found lying in a field with a bullet through his head. There is no shortage of suspects in the cranky old man’s murder, but the method is so ingenious that Detective Sergeant Ian Fellowes is baffled.

Enter Keith Calder, who is able to reconstruct what just might have happened…

First published in 1993 by Macmillan London Limited.

https://www.amazon.ca/Thin-Air-Keith...dp/B07M6YBVJ1/

Born in 1926, Gerald Hammond lived in Scotland, where he retired from his profession as an architect in 1982 to pursue his love of shooting and fishing and to write full time. After his first novel, Fred in Situ, was published in 1965, Gerald became a prolific author with over 70 published novels.

A few more Jecks titles have dropped to £0.99. The link now picks up 24 titles, still including a couple of strays. So, if you're a Jecks fan, or want/need a couple of titles, it might be worth clicking the link again and looking at the expanded list.

I'm not going to type out 16 titles - here's a link for them all. Just go take a look if you're interested in Jecks' books. I picked up two titles I've waited for for a long time, so I'm happy.

While on the way to other things, I noticed that there is a short story in the Lady of Ashes series by Christine Trent that is free at Kobo US, but not at Kindle US or Kindle UK ($0.99 and £0.99 respectively).

A Death on the way to Portsmouth: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-d...-to-portsmouth

Spoiler:
Quote:
Violet Harper might be fearless when it comes to caring for the dead, but she trembles at the thought of boarding trains—those behemoths of belching smoke and screeching brakes. Nevertheless, she must travel via one of these beasts from Southampton to Portsmouth. Her anxiety turns into horror when a fellow passenger is murdered as the train carriage enters a tunnel. Can Violet discover who the murderer is before the train reaches its next stop?

Note: this is a short story, not a full-length novel.

The Hammond Innes Collection Volume One contains The Wreck of the Mary Deare, Wreckers Must Breathe, and The Land God Gave to Cain. It is a US Kindle Daily Deal today at $2.99, matched (and coupon/VIPable) at Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Hammond-Innes...dp/B07DW1JSB7/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...ion-volume-one

Spoiler:
Quote:
A trio of compelling classics of adventure and suspense—featuring The Wreck of the Mary Deare—from “Great Britain’s leading adventure novelist” (Financial Times).

British novelist Hammond Innes was perhaps best known for his nautical mystery, The Wreck of the Mary Deare, which was made into a film starring Gary Cooper and Charlton Heston. But the prolific writer, World War II veteran, and dedicated yachtsman wrote over thirty novels of adventure and suspense over his long career. The two additional novels collected here tell the tales of a World War II plot and a rescue on the frozen Labrador Peninsula. As always, “the art of writing thoroughly well-documented and ably-written thrillers is perfectly understood by Innes, whose work stands in a class by itself” (V. S. Pritchett).

The Wreck of the Mary Deare: Capt. John Sands has only moments to steer his sailboat clear of a freighter coming out of nowhere on a foggy night. He catches a glimpse of the ship as it passes by: Her name is Mary Deare, and her crew is nowhere to be seen. A salvage expert, Sands boards the drifting hulk and finds only one man aboard: the first officer, Gideon Patch, half-mad from trying to sail the freighter on his own. Getting the ship safely to port and unraveling the mystery of why it was abandoned will reveal an incredible story of greed and betrayal on the high seas.

“Original in its plot and extraordinarily clever in its constant succession of mysterious twists and surprising revelations, it is an utterly engrossing tale.” —The New York Times

Wreckers Must Breathe: This prescient World War II adventure, written early on in the war in 1940, concerns a German U-boat hiding off the coast of Cornwall. Journalist Walter Craig is on a seaside vacation as reports come in of German mobilization, and England finds herself on the brink of war. Cruising in a small fishing vessel, Craig and charter boat captain Big Logan nearly collide with a shadowy black shape. Along this rocky stretch of the English Channel, these two men just found themselves on the front lines . . .

“An uncommonly good story, capitally written.” —London Evening Standard

The Land God Gave to Cain: In this “literate and exciting adventure story,” a young man risks his life to respond to a distress call on Canada’s Labrador Peninsula (Kirkus Reviews). After Ian Ferguson’s father was wounded in World War II, his ham radio was all he had left to communicate with. When Ian finds his father’s last transmission—a call for help from a survivor of a lost expedition—he journeys across a frozen landscape to save the man’s life . . . and honor his father.

“Innes makes one shiver with cold. . . . Original plot, plenty of action, spectacular scenery.” —The New York Times

The nineteenth Phryne Fisher murder mystery

1929: pretty little golden-haired girls are going missing in Melbourne. But they're not just pretty. Three of them are pregnant, poor girls from the harsh confines of the Magdalen Laundry. People are getting nervous.

Polly Kettle, a pushy, self-important Girl Reporter with ambition and no sense of self preservation, decides to investigate - and promptly goes missing herself.

It's time for Phryne and Dot to put a stop to this and find Polly Kettle before something quite irreparable happens to all of them. It's a tale of convents and plots, piracy, murder and mystery... and Phryne finally finds out if it's true that blondes have more fun.
