"Professor Challenger Omnibus" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Just uploaded a thoroughly revised and proof-read new version of my "Professor Challenger Omnibus" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Although less well-known than his Sherlock Holmes stories these are, nonetheless, very well worth reading.
I've added illustrations to "The Lost World" and "The Poison Belt" for this edition. Enjoy! |

What manuscripts? There are no manuscripts of Shakespeare, other than a disputed fragment of the unpublished play "Sir Thomas More", and six signatures, all on legal documents.

Of course there are no manuscripts. I was kidding, as presumably was Kumabjorn when she asked for annotations.

An annotated edition would be nice, but unrealistic for a public domain edition. That's why I have a shelf full of the complete set of "The Arden Shakespeare", which is the best annotated edition, in my view.

I'm finishing with Kipling's "The Jungle Book", and "The Second Jungle Book" will come after. However, I'm not completely satisfied with the illustrations. The ones I have at the moment I took them from this book in TIA. The scans are fine, but the printing of the book (or its conservation) is barely acceptable. If anyone can find a source of better quality images, I'd be grateful (and the final ebook will be better).

@Jellby -- did you check other offerings from internet archive? If not, I looked at these, and the images are darker/stronger. (Maybe too dark?) But it is always easier to go lighter--you cannot get back detail that is missing because the source is too pale and washed out the details. Anyway, you might take a peek.

Actually, I was especially interested in getting a scan of the British edition, as it apparently has at least one illustration that's not present in the American one (the title image of the last story, in the American edition it's duplicated from the first story). Compare: British edition American edition Unfortunately, that British edition scan is quite blurry. (I'd like to have the British cover too.) |

When black details are seeming lost I have found that you can turn up the chroma a lot and get the color back. I use IrfanView for that.

@Jellby
http://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au have a copy, but the images might be from the gutenberg edition. No chapter head decorations either. Quality maybe a very tiny bit better than what you have. Re: turning up the chroma --- does GIMP have a tool for dodge and burn? Sometimes dodge can bring out details that were hidden in the dark shadows. In PSP I use a dodge brush on small areas to do that, rather than brightening and lightening the entire image. (or vice-versa, use burn brush on small areas to make details darker). Working on "1887 B.C." by Lees & Clutterbuck, the authors of "Three in Norway – by two of them". This time, they travel to the wilderness of British Columbia.
Besides I'm working on a brace of Norwegian books on polar exploration – Roald Amundsen's descriptions of his passage through the North-East Passage with "Maud", the dramatic aeroplane flight of N25, and the trans-arctic flight with the dirigible "Norge". Further down the pipeline are the original version of Fridtjof Nansen "Fram over Polhavet", Bernt Nordahl "Framgutterne", and Carsten Borchgrevink's account of the Southern Cross Antarctic expedition. I've got the play "Vår ære og vår makt" and the novel "Ung må verden ennu være" by Nordahl Grieg ready for new years day, when the 70 year limit is up. |
