Book Details change

I'm looking for where the option is to readjust the Book Details back to columns, as it was in 7.2 and before. I've tried User Interface Layout, and that hasn't worked (nor User Interface Style).

I've attached what it looked like in 7.2 and 7.3. I can't for the life of me remember if that was an option we could choose, or if it was automatically like that. I much prefer the previous layout, it's easier to read and fit if there is a long Comment or Note, too.

No, that did not work, it was already at Narrow.

Before asking my question, I changed it to Wide, then back to Narrow, and it didn't 'fix' it. Since I reinstalled 7.3 after I asking my question, I changed to Wide and back to Narrow, and still didn't 'fix' it.

Plus, changing to Wide opened Cover Browser (on top of the book list) which I never use.

Edit: My apologies, in my opening post, while rearranging things to clear up one matter, I didn't notice that I forgot to retype the part about how in 7.2 the Metadata was on the left, and Comments/Notes were on the right. Sorry for the confusion.

Hello, I think i'll have the same problem. After updating to 7.3 the comment below the other metadata that are shown. With 7.2 the metadata were left and the comment right.

This is the {Comments} details that used to be along the right side of the metadata in Narrow mode.

@kovid: I confirm that comments are shown as vertical even if the layout is set to narrow. It seems to be related to no longer requiring the restart when changing layout. If I look in gui2/init.py I see at line 503:

    def init_layout_mixin(self):
        self.vl_tabs = VLTabs(self)
        self.centralwidget.layout().addWidget(self.vl_tabs)
        self.layout_container = CentralContainer(self)
        self.centralwidget.layout().addWidget(self.layout_container)
        print(f'****** self.layout_container.is_wide {self.layout_container.is_wide}')
        self.book_details = BookDetails(self.layout_container.is_wide, self)

The print statement I added shows this:

****** self.layout_container.is_wide True

even if the layout is narrow. If I change the line after the print statement to

        print(f'****** self.layout_container.is_wide {self.layout_container.is_wide}')
        self.book_details = BookDetails(False, self)

then it works correctly in narrow mode, but of course doesn't work correctly in wide mode.

I don't see any way to change the "vertical" parameter given to BookDetails after calibre is initialized. It is used in several further class instantiations within BookDetails. Reinstantiating the classes would work in theory but I doubt it would work in practice, leaving all sorts of signals etc hanging.

No - i use Linux Mint 21.2. And I have the same problem with Windows 10.

FTR: ditto with long text custom columns with Heading position: Show heading above the text

And: the User interface layout: setting in Preference->L&F->Main interface has lost its tooltip, it has one in 6.29.
