Next time, add a link to your post. Otherwise, it might be hard (or impossible) for people to actually find the thing themselves.

I couldn't find it myself (even after searching for the word "Kindle" on the site), however, I did read a few interesting stories.

eReader for the iPhone/iPod Touch is not all that good for your eyes. Having to look at tiny text through a haze of fingerprints is not good.

You do not see the fingerprints. I have a lot of fingerprints on my Nokia N85 phone screen and I just read the beginning of a book on it and it was surprisingly readable. Since you have the back light you do not see fingerprints. And they are trivial to remove.

Are there actual empirical studies that shows that eyes are hurt by reading?

It's certainly the case that your eyes can be damaged by straining them in poor light. In the days before electric light, lace workers famously used to go blind at a very early age, due to having to do detailed work in poor light.

Well, I do not know. If you look at for example

http://www.agingeye.net/visionbasics/visionmyths.php

they list:

Quote:
Myths about Vision and Eyeglasses
● "Although eyeglasses makes you see better, they cause vision to get worse over time.
Eyeglasses will need to be constantly changed with higher powered one."
● "Don't wear your glasses so often, you need to exercise your eyes!"
● "Overuse of the Eye' or 'use of eye' makes vision worse"
● "Sitting Too Close to the TV Is Bad for Your Eyes"
● "Reading in the Dark Will Damage Your Eyes"
● "Eye exercises can improve vision"
● "Over the counter reading glasses hurt the eye"
● "Wearing contact lenses will prevent nearsightedness from getting worse"
● "Eating carrots can improve vision"
● "Using night light in infant rooms will make then nearsighted"
and

Quote:
Although reading in dim light is unwise because it may cause your eyes to feel tired or uncomfortable, it can't hurt your eyes. There really is very little you can do that will permanently damage your eyes. Similarly, reading small print or reading extensively cannot cause damage to the eyes. This is true even for people who already have poor vision. Although using computers will not damage your eyes, fatigue, eye strain or dry eye may occur with prolonged use. The eyes are meant to be used!

I may be wrong. A google search reveals a difference of opinion as to whether or not this is an "urban myth".

I see the fingerprints and constantly feel compelled to clean them off over and over and over. Argh.
