You should be making the first book in the series free and not the 6th. Nobody is going to download the 6th book read it and then go get the first. The way it works is get the 1st book for free, read it and then get the rest.

Hey, I just downloaded. If I really get into the story, I might back fill.
But you point is spot on. Baens Free library had the benefit of pimping some of the authors work, hoping to make a few more sales (it works )

My point is that #6 is free and for a measly $2.99 one can have all 6 titles. Read a bit of #6 and see if you like the writer's style and premise. Or download a sample of the 1-5 set and see if it seems intriguing. If so, the get #6 before it goes off sale.

Take a look at Tor. They give away free eBooks. These are all the first book in a series. They don't give away the any other book in a series. I would not read the 6th book because there could very well be spoilers. Even a character name could be a spoiler.

Yeesh, I had no idea I'd cause such controversy by offering a book for free. But - firstly - I've offered the first novel in the series free a couple of times already over the past couple of years. And secondly, a few people who have read book #6 have then bought the first book in the series. There are no absolutely hard and fast rules with this kind of stuff.
